NEW DELHI: Chants of "Modi Modi" were raised by female MPs as they took turns thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the passage of the landmark women's reservation Bill, appropriately named "Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam," which was passed by the Parliament on Thursday and represents a significant step in the empowerment of one-half of the country's population. The Bill passed the Lok Sabha's legislative test earlier on Wednesday by a landslide margin of 454 votes in favour to 2 votes against. The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023 was the subject of a daylong debate in the Upper House, to which Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had made a brief response, stating that it would be enacted after following the proper procedures. Prior to the vote, PM Modi encouraged the Rajya Sabha members to approve the Bill with all of their votes. He claimed that the Bill will give the populace new faith and trust. "All members and political parties have contributed significantly to the advancement of 'Nari Shakti' and the empowerment of women.
