JAMMU: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated today that over two crore visitors have visited the UT in the past year, claiming that the increasing tourism is a "living example" of the "Change in Jammu & Kashmir." Dr. Jitendra Singh stated in an exclusive interview with that "and that has happened because terrorism has declined." New Delhi, Jan 8: The Gujarat government's decision to provide remission to 11 prisoners in the case of gangraping Bilkis Bano and killing seven of her family members during the 2002 state riots was overturned by the Supreme Court on Monday. The court claimed that the decisions were "stereotypical" and made without consideration for the facts. The prisoners were given a two-week deadline by a bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan to turn themselves in to the jail administration. The bench stated that the Gujarati government was not the right government to issue the remission order, holding the PIL contesting the remission to be maintainable.The supreme court made it clear that the State has the authority to choose whether to grant a convict's remission plea once an offender is prosecuted and sentenced. Maharashtra conducted the trials for the guilty. We didn't have to discuss the other matters. However, we have for the sake of completion. The Gujarat administration has violated the rule of law by usurping and abusing its authority that was not granted to it. The bench declared that the remission orders should be annulled on that basis as well. The ruling took more than a hundred pages to complete. The top court further declared as "nullity" a ruling from a different bench dated May 13, 2022, which requested that the Gujarat government take into account convicts' pleas for remission because the pleas were obtained by "playing fraud on the court" and by omitting important information. It said that this was a textbook instance of the court's order being utilised to subvert the rule of law by giving remission. The supreme court declared that the takeover of power and the misuse of the legal system on May 13, 2022, had violated the rule of law. The bench declared, "We strike down the remission orders on the ground of Gujarat government's usurpation of power."On October 12 of last year, following an 11-day hearing on the petitions, including Bano's, the supreme court had reserved its decision. The top court reserved its decision, but it did order the Centre and the Gujarat government to provide the original documentation pertaining to the 11 convicts' sentence remission by October 16. During its September 2018 hearing, the Supreme Court questioned whether prisoners had a basic right to request a reduction in their sentence. The supreme court had noted during the previous arguments that state governments ought to give all prisoners the chance to reform and reintegrate into society and that they shouldn't be allowed to be selective in the remission of sentences.In addition to Bano's petition challenging the remission that the Gujarat government had granted them, a number of other PILs have also contested the relief, including one from CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali, independent journalist Revati Laul, and former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University Roop Rekha Verma. NEW DELHI: Ibrahim Shaheeb, the Maldives' envoy to India, was spotted leaving the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday morning in the South Block of the capital city. This is in the midst of a controversy surrounding disparaging remarks made on social media about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep by a few Maldivian ministers. Ibrahim Shaheeb, the High Commissioner of the Maldives to India, was observed coming into the MEA office building and departing shortly after. Last week, a bitter controversy erupted when the deputy minister of the Maldives, together with several cabinet members and government officials, made derogatory and obscene remarks against Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep. Solih commented on X using his official account, saying, "I denounce the Maldivian government officials' use of hate speech against India on social media."He reiterated that "India has always been a good friend to the Maldives and we must not allow such callous remarks to negatively impact the age-old friendship between our two countries." The offensive comments made on social media against the former and other Indian locals, according to former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, are "odious" and "reprehensible." JAIPUR: The three new criminal justice laws were passed with the motto "citizen first, dignity first, and justice first," according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also stated on Sunday that the police must now use data rather than "danda" in their job. Speaking during the 58th conference of Inspector Generals and Director Generals of Police (DGPs and IGPs) in this location, Modi urged the police to prioritise women's safety so that they can operate with courage "kabhi bhi aur kahin bhi (anytime, anywhere)." Amit Shah to visit Jammu on Jan 9, to take part in development programmes

JAMMU: According to sources, the Union Home Minister will visit Jammu on Tuesday. While there, he would attend several activities pertaining to development and launch the city's e-bus service. Shah is making his first trip to Jammu and Kashmir after militants at Poonch on December 21 ambushed two army trucks, killing five troops and wounding two more. Outrage was sparked when the remains of three civilians were discovered a day later in the Poonch district, not far from the scene of the previous day's events. According to a home ministry official, the home minister would visit Jammu on January 9 and preside over a review meeting on the complete development of Jammu and Kashmir.In addition, Shah will start an e-bus service, introduce the central government's "Vikas Bharat Sankalp Yatra," and set the groundwork for a number of development projects. According to the official, appointment letters for various government jobs would be given to the young people chosen for selection by the home minister. SRINAGAR, Jan 7: In the company of party leader Mehbooba Mufti, seasoned politician Muzaffar Hussain Baig re-joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday, according to reports. At a PDP-hosted event in the Jammu and Kashmir region of Anantnag to mark the eighth anniversary of party founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's passing, Baig became a member of the party. Additionally, he performed fatiha, or special prayers, at Sayeed's mausoleum in the district of South Kashmir's Bijbhera. According to party spokesperson Mohit Bhan, "Baig has returned to the PDP."After Sayeed passed away in 2016, Baig, a co-founder of the PDP in the late 1990s, became the party's patron. In 2020, Baig, a former deputy chief minister, left the party and was predicted to join Sajad Lone's People's Conference. Baig, a former member of the Lok Sabha from Baramulla, did not formally disclose his position, even though his wife Safina joined Lone's party.
