Opposition Members Seek Timeline For Holding Assembly Polls In J&K

New Delhi, Feb 6: On Tuesday, members of the opposition in the Lok Sabha asked the administration to call early assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. During a discussion on The Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Hasnain Masoodi (NC) made a call for the early holding of elections in the union territory. He claimed that before the Supreme Court had to get involved, the national government ought to have made a decision regarding the polls. A few months ago, the highest court ordered the Election Commission to schedule assembly elections for September of this year in Jammu and Kashmir.Masoodi stated On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that important choices will be made by his cabinet. According to Masoodi, elections in the union territory ought to be conducted before any further significant choices are made. Ajay Misra, the minister of state for housing, stepped in to point out that elections for local bodies were held in the previous state. Lok Sabha Takes Up Bill To Amend Local Body Laws In J&K

New Delhi, Feb 6: A bill to give reservations to members of Other Backward Classes in Jammu and Kashmir's panchayats and municipalities as well as to align local body rules in the Union territory with the Constitution's provisions was brought up for consideration by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The Jammu and Kashmir Local Bodies Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was introduced by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai and is scheduled to be passed by the House. On Monday, the bill was presented to the House. The Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act of 2000, the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act of 2000, and the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act of 1989 are all intended to be amended by this bill. According to Rai, the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act's provisions regarding the state election commissioner "are at variance" with the Constitution. Hasnain Masoodi, a member of the National Conference, participated in the discussion and stated that the government has not set a date for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which became a union territory after Article 370 was repealed and bifurcated. He stated that the Supreme Court's decision to impose an upper bound on the holding of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir is a source of "shame" for the government. India To See Investment Of USD 67 Billion In Next 5-6 Years In Energy Sector: PM

Goa, Feb 6: Inviting international investors to share in India's success story, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Tuesday that the country will witness investments totaling USD 67 billion in the energy industry during the next five to six years. Here, Modi opened the second edition of India Energy Week, stating that the nation's economy is expanding at a rate of more than 7.5% and will soon overtake the United States as the third largest in the world. He said that the country is anticipated to raise its refining capacity from 254 MMTPA (million metric tonne per annum) to 450 MMTPA by 2030, inviting international firms to join in India's energy sector expansion. "The energy sector in India will receive an investment of USD 67 billion over the next five to six years," he declared. The prime minister went on to say that India is making previously unheard-of financial investments in the energy sector. He added that by 2045, the nation's primary energy consumption would have doubled. According to Modi, India is the fourth-biggest importer of LNG and the third-largest user of LPG and crude oil. According to the prime minister, India's energy management plan has resulted in lower costs for petrol and diesel over the past two years, despite global challenges. He stated that every analyst believes that India is the biggest economy with the highest rate of growth and will soon overtake the United States as the third largest in the world. He stated that India's GDP growth is currently more than 7.5%, which is higher than what international organisations had predicted. According to him, government reforms are contributing to an increase in domestic natural gas output, and India aims to increase the proportion of gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030. He mentioned that in the last ten years, the percentage of ethanol blended into fuel has risen from 1.5 to 12 percent. By 2025, he said, petrol will have 20 percent ethanol blended in. The prime minister stated that although India only contributes 4% of world emissions, the country aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. ROURKELA, Feb 6: On Tuesday, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, is expected to arrive in Odisha. Gandhi banners, cutouts, and hoardings have been put up at Biramitrapur, a tiny industrial town in the Sundergarh district via which the yatra will enter the state from Jharkhand. Rashmi Padhee, the party's Sundergarh district president, stated that senior state Congress leaders have gathered in Rourkela steel city, about 35 km from Biramitrapur, and there is a noticeable excitement among the populace to see Rahul Gandhi, who is known to the locals as "former PM Indira Gandhi's grandson." FM Presents J&K Interim Budget 2024-25 & Revised Estimates For Current Fiscal In Parl

NEW DELHI, Feb 5: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman presented the Government of Jammu and Kashmir's Revised Estimates for 2023–24 and Interim Budget for 2024–25 to the Parliament today. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will discuss the two appropriation bills on the Supplementary Budget for 2023–24 and the Vote on Account for 2024–25 in this regard. The UT Finance Department had created the Interim Budget for the upcoming fiscal year as well as the Supplementary Budget for the present one. In order to do this, the Department evaluated the UT government's revenue receipts from stamp duty, motor spirit tax, excise, and GST. Additionally, non-tax income from the sale of timber, mining royalties, electricity and water supplies, annual rent from industrial areas, etc., was also looked at. The UT government's own revenue is projected to be Rs. 20,867 crore. The Government of UT also pursued the Government of India to obtain government funding. The UT's efforts in this regard were spearheaded by Chief Secretary Shri Atal Dulloo and Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha. To assess these demands of the UT Government, important meetings were held in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Finance in August 2023, October 2023, and January 2024. In recent months, the Union Home Minister and Union Finance Minister personally examined the UT Government's financial management. Consequently, the Central Government has committed to giving the UT Government ₹41751.44 Cr during this fiscal year and ₹ 37277.74 Cr during the following fiscal year. The Union Government's Revised Estimates for 2023–2024 and Budget Estimates for 2024–2025 accurately reflect these aid levels. This support will be given in accordance with MHA Demand No. 58 for Support to the UT. This help covers the UT government's regular support (resource gap) as well as the equity contribution for hydropower projects at Kiru, Kwar, and Rattle, among other things. These aid amounts are included in the Union Budget, which is currently before Parliament and will be discussed prior to the UT's interim budget.Building on this, the Jammu and Kashmir government created its Vote on Account for 2024–25 and Supplementary Budget for 2023–24. The two appropriation bills—the vote on account and the supplementary demands—that were to be presented to parliament were also written by the finance department. Do Not Use Children In Poll Campaigning: EC To Political Parties

New Delhi, Feb 5: The Election Commission requested on Monday that political parties refrain from using minors in any way during the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, including through the distribution of flyers and brochures or sloganeering. The poll panel expressed its "zero tolerance" for parties and candidates using minors in any way throughout the election process in a letter to the parties. According to the poll watchdog, political figures and candidates should refrain from using kids in any way when running for office, including holding them in their arms, transporting them in cars, or using them at rallies.This ban includes using kids to pretend to be in a political campaign in any way, such as through spoken words, poetry, music, or the exhibition of a political party or candidate's emblem, the EC stated in a statement. It stated, however, that the simple fact that a child is with their parent or guardian while they are near a political figure who is not engaged in any political party election campaigns will not be seen as a breach of the rules. In light of the upcoming parliamentary elections, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has repeatedly underlined the critical role that political parties play as the EC's primary stakeholders and urged them to actively participate in defending democratic norms.
