Defence ministry clears procurement of military hardware worth Rs 84560 cr

NEW DELHI: In order to improve the armed forces' overall combat capabilities, the defence ministry approved the purchase of military gear worth Rs 84,560 crore on Friday, including multi-mission maritime aircraft. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the procurement proposals. New generation anti-tank mines, software defined radios, medium range maritime reconnaissance and multi-mission maritime aircraft, heavy weight torpedoes, and air defence tactical control radar are among the suggestions approved by the Defence Analytical Commission. According to the defence ministry, the DAC authorised the purchase of multi-mission and medium-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft to bolster the Indian Coast Guard's and Indian Navy's observation and interdiction capacities.In order to improve the air defence systems, particularly their capacity to identify small, slow-moving, and low-flying targets, a proposal to purchase air defence tactical control radar was also authorised, according to the statement. "In order to enhance the operational efficiency and domination in the tactical battle area for engaging targets that are beyond visual line of sight by the mechanised forces, the AoN (approval of necessity) under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category has been accorded for procurement of canister launched anti-armour loiter munition system," said the defence ministry. It stated that in order to improve the Indian Air Force's operational capabilities and reach, the DAC granted AoN permission to purchase flight refuelling aircraft. BIHAR: On Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi administration of introducing the 'Agniveer' programme to syphon off military budget emoluments and use it to enrich a large corporate conglomerate. Gandhi made the accusation at Mohania, in the Kaimur district of Bihar, which borders Uttar Pradesh. This is a region where a big number of young people are known to enlist in the military. Two years ago, the area saw widespread demonstrations against the Agniveer plan. POONCH: Ghulam Nabi Azad, a former union minister and the head of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), has criticised the PDP and National Conference for misleading the people of Jammu and Kashmir by using strong rhetoric to gain power. Speaking at a sizable public gathering following today's road march across the border town of Mendhar in district Poonch, Azad 'trained guns' at PDP and National Conference leaders, accusing them of misleading innocent Jammu and Kashmiri citizens with cries like "autonomy" and "self-rule." But they lost sight of those catchphrases after they came to power. To seize power, they exploited the innocent as a voting bloc. The public, he argued, ought to be aware of this and not allow these political parties to use them. A former Union Health Minister attacked the People's Democratic Party and the National Conference for their power-hungry politics and shady partnerships. He cited the ways in which the PDP and NC worked with the BJP to seize power. He emphasised that although the BJP had not appointed him as a member of parliament or as a minister, figures such as Omar Abdullah had been ministers in earlier BJP-led administrations. Azad charged that the NC and PDP put their own interests ahead of the needs of the people. Citing the power-hungry goals of the NC and BJP, he issued a warning about possible future partnerships between them.The Chairman of the DPAP stressed how important it is for the Gujjar and Pahari people to remain united. He called on the two communities to unite and oppose any attempts by political parties to sow discord between them. He emphasised that the region's growth and development depend on keeping this togetherness. While praising the Pahari group for receiving ST classification, Azad stressed that the Gujjar people's quota should be kept unaltered because it is essential to their socioeconomic advancement and empowerment. He warned against the polarising strategies of other political parties and insisted on maintaining a laser-like focus on solving public issues. Azad reaffirmed his commitment to promoting wealth, peace, and development.He emphasised how crucial it is to revive programmes like "Roshni" in order to properly handle land ownership concerns and fight corruption. The former chief minister promised to put in endless effort to combat corruption and advance government transparency. He reiterated that he is still committed to bringing about possibilities for everyone and enhancing the socioeconomic climate in the area. JAMMU: Mushtaq Ahmad Shah Bukhari, a well-known Pahari leader and former minister from Jammu and Kashmir, joined the BJP here on Thursday, giving the party a significant boost ahead of the parliamentary elections. Two-time Surankote, Poonch district MLA Bukhari resigned from the National Conference in February 2022 following a disagreement with party president Farooq Abdullah on the designation of Pahari-speaking people as Scheduled Tribes. At the party headquarters here, retired senior superintendent of police Shabir Geelani and former bureaucrat G M Khuwaja were among the hundreds of followers of Bukhari who were welcomed into the party by Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina and other party leaders."I have adhered to my pledge to join a party that satisfies our long-standing demand for ST status." Bukhari told reporters, "I am grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Raina for providing justice to Paharis who have fought for the ST status for 40 long years." Four communities—the Gadda Brahmin, Koli, Paddari Tribe, and Pahari Ethnic Group—have been added to the list of Scheduled Tribes in Jammu and Kashmir by the BJP-led central government. The former minister declared at a function that "we will not hesitate in supporting any party which will help the community in achieving its demand of ST status." This comment did not sit well with the NC leadership, and they requested him to explain himself. This was after he resigned from the NC. After leaving the meeting, he tendered his resignation from the party's basic membership, claiming to have had a "heated argument" with Abdullah about the matter. Raina stated, ''Bukhari is not only a political heavyweight but also a deeply spiritual figure who has a great deal of influence over people (from his group) in Jammu and Kashmir. His entry into the BJP will help the party's grassroots efforts.He declared that there would be only one party remaining in Jammu and Kashmir and that there would be a wave of support for the BJP and the prime minister who had given justice to all segments of society who had been denied their rights for the previous 70 years.
