Mehar Tunnel Excavation Along Jammu-Srinagar Highway Suspended After Bulges Appear On Sidewalls

RAMBAN/JAMMU, Dec 18:  The 270-kilometer Jammu-Srinagar national highway has "pressure and bulges" developing on its sidewalls, which has forced the suspension of excavation work for the Mehar tunnel, officials announced on Monday. Over a year and a half ago, work on the 780-meter C-type tunnel began in order to avoid the Mehar-Cafeteria section of Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, which is prone to slides. After a significant landslip damaged the tunnel's mouth in June of this year, excavation on the Cafeteria Morh side of the tunnel was put on hold. Thus far, excavation work has covered almost 400 metres.An official from DMR Construction, the company doing the construction, stated that after "pressure and bulges" were found on the side walls, the excavation work was halted for the safety of the workers. On December 12, all equipment and labour were removed from the tunnel project. A senior DMR Construction official, Vinay Kumar, stated that the company has notified the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and that joint teams of experts and designers are expected to visit the tunnel for a comprehensive investigation. Due to the slow progress of the four-lane expansion of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, multiple deadlines have already been missed since the project began in 2011. People Say Kashmir Is Mini-Switzerland, I Say Switzerland Is Mini-Kashmir: Bhagyashree

SRINAGAR, Dec 18:  Actor Bhagyashree says that Kashmir is peaceful and stunning, and he questions why people travel abroad when India has so much natural beauty. The 54-year-old, who gained notoriety in 1989 with her feature debut "Maine Pyar Kiya," claimed that many travellers are eager to see the Valley but are afraid. "This place always brings to mind the couplet by Amir Khusro, 'If there is Paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.'" During your lifetime, make sure to visit Kashmir. I don't know why people travel to Europe or Switzerland because this place is so serene and lovely. Why travel abroad when there is so much beauty in our own nation? At an Anantnag tourist resort, Bhagyashree said Kashmir is compared to Switzerland by some here, but I argue that Switzerland is more like Switzerland. Here, you experience inner serenity. You will never run into trouble because people are so wonderful, she continued. The actor also lauded the hospitality and food of Kashmir. She went on, "The people are as sweet as jaggery and the food is very tasty." Most recently, Bhagyashree appeared in the viral video "Sajni Shinde Ka," which also starred Nimrat Kaur and Radhika Madan. LeT module tasked to kill off-duty cops busted: DGP

Srinagar, Dec 17 : Three militants involved in the December 9 attack on a police constable in Bemina were taken into custody after police in Srinagar busted a militant module that was out to kill police officers who were not on duty. At a press conference held today at the Police Control Room (PCR) in this location, Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain stated that following extensive investigations and impenetrable evidence, police had determined that three individuals were responsible for the attack: Danish Ahmed Mala Sector A, Hamdaniya Colony, Bemina; Mehnan Khan, son of Mehraj Din Khan of Khawajapora, Rainawari; and Imtiyaz Ahmed Khanday, son of Taria Ahmed Khanday, Hamdaniya Coloney Sect A, Bemina."FIR number 112/23 has been registered in Police Station Bemina under Section 7/27 307, IPC 16, 18, and 38 ULAP," he stated in this regard. According to the DGP, the three were working for Pulwama-born handler Hamza-Burhan, who is based in Pakistan.Danish Malla, the mastermind among the three terrorists, devised a plan to attack Muhammad Hafiz Chak, a police constable who was returning home on December 9 after doing his duty. Six bullets were fired at him; two went through, and one struck his spine, which the physicians had to remove. "The constable who was injured is stable," he said. At Hamdaniya Colony, Bemina, Imtiyaz Ahmed Khanday had fired at the constable Hafiz. He said that Imtiyaz Ahmed Khanday produced the weapon of offense—a Canik TP09 pistol made in Turkey—as well as one magazine and one 9 mm round during questioning.Seven rounds, one magazine, and a second CanikTP09 pistol manufactured in Turkey were taken from Mehnan Khan. Two magazines and fifty-seven 9mm rounds were found from Danish Mall, the speaker added, mentioning the terrorists' ties to Lashkar-e-Toiba/TRF. According to the police chief, the trio that was arrested had prepared a long list of police officers that they intended to target during the course of their investigations. "While there were other people on the list as well, police officers made up the majority of the targets," he said.According to Swain, additional weapons, including CanikTP09 pistols, are being dropped from drones and forcefully entered J&K. He continued, "Such weapons are easy to carry because of their light weight." When asked if there was a link between the module and the death of police inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani, who was attacked on October 29 while playing cricket at Eidgah in Srinagar, the DGP replied that the National Investigation Agency was looking into the matter. He applauded police for their thorough investigation and successful prosecution of the accused in the Bemina cop attack case. JKP train women in arms to join VDGs

DODA: A group of 250 women are being trained by the police in the Doda district to become Village Defence Guards (VDGs), which will enable them to stop terrorist activities in their communities. These rural women from the hilly district of Doda are receiving training in firearms and other fighting techniques in order to thwart the evil schemes of the peace enemy. "Motivated to play their roles in safeguarding their villages, these women came forward and opted for weapon training as over a dozen villagers were killed in Kulhand massacre by the terrorists in the year 2006," sources said. There are currently 875 VDGs with over 6000 members, of which only 4600 are compensated. Training in firing, area domination, and patrolling is provided to these VDG members. These VDG members, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Doda, are doing well and assisting law enforcement and other security agencies in monitoring anti-national elements. According to the SSP, the police have established firing ranges in Doda, Bhaderwah, and Gandoh where these VDG members receive regular training and practice firing. Area domination operations launched in Poonch, Rajouri

JAMMU:  Area-wide dominance operations have been initiated in several locations within the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch with the aim of eliminating terrorists and their supporters, as well as locating their hiding places in forested areas, upper reaches, and other areas. In the Rajouri district's Thannamandi area, a few hideouts were broken during the operations, yielding a significant amount of weapons, ammunition, and explosives. Officials claim that joint teams of the Army, police, and paramilitary forces have been searching for militants in forests, mountains, and other vulnerable areas where they may have taken refuge."The officials stated that the area domination operations will increase pressure on the militants in the upper reaches and forests, resulting in encounters and their elimination." Just yesterday, at Thannamandi, security forces retrieved four grenades, materials to make IEDs, two pistols with four magazines, four hand grenades, bags, blankets, trousers and other items. It appears from the recoveries that the militants may have stayed nearby. Alternatively, it's possible that the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) dumped the shipment and intended for it to be picked up later, but the security forces recovered it in time.
