POONCH: The Mughal road that connects Shopian in the Kashmir Valley to Poonch was blocked on Monday as the high-altitude portions of the Jammu region received additional snowfall and the plains were pummelling by rain. According to officials, the Pir ki Gali area's severe snowfall has obstructed the Mughal road. They warned that until the weather improves, no vehicles would be permitted to travel from the Poonch and Rajouri districts towards the valley. Mini-Bus Turns Turtle In Reasi, many Pilgrims Injured

Reasi : Several people were hurt in an accident involving a minibus carrying pilgrims in Jammu's Reasi area. According to reports, the tragedy happened early on Monday when a tourist minibus with the licence plate JK02AG 4643 overturned on the Katra-Reasi route close to Nau Deviya. A police officer who confirmed the accident to News Agency said the minibus had lost control and turned turtle while travelling from Katra to Shiv Khori. On board, some pilgrims were hurt. According to him, swift reaction teams quickly responded on the site and promptly supplied the injured with the required medical care before transporting them to CHC Katra for additional care. JAMMU: Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced on Monday that the building of a 224-meter (2-lane) viaduct at Sher-e-Bibi has been completed successfully, improving connectivity throughout the area and facilitating travel through difficult terrain. A post on X said, We have successfully finished building a 224-meter (2-lane) viaduct at Sherebibi in Jammu and Kashmir, at an estimated cost of 12 crores. This infrastructure is located along the Ramban to Banihal portion of NH-44. "This 224-meter segment, as a part of the broader project, not only reduces the travel distance by 125 metres, thus mitigating steep gradients, but also avoids the need for a steep cutting with a hill slope angle exceeding 80 degrees."Additionally, it substantially eases traffic flow by avoiding the treacherous hills in the Sherebibi Area. It's crucial to remember that this project contributes to the region's economic development and improves connections everywhere. Fresh snowfall in parts of Kashmir, Ladakh, rain in plains

Srinagar, Oct 16: On Monday, fresh snowfall in some areas of the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh Union Territory as rain pounded the plains and temperatures plummeted. On Monday, sporadic light to moderate rain or snow is expected in J&K, according to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar. According to the MET office, the weather in J&K is currently cloudy with sporadic rain and snowfall over higher reaches at various locations.It stated that on October 17, sporadic light precipitation or snowfall over higher reaches was likely. The MeT office predicted that starting on October 18 the weather would likely start to improve overall. The MeT office further stated that Jammu and Kashmir may experience a considerable dip in temperature. Snow fell over Gurez in Bandipora, north Kashmir, and Peer Ki Gali on the Shopian-Poonch road on Monday. As a precaution due to the recent snowfall, vehicular traffic on Bandipora-Gurez Road was shut down.Along with Leh, Kargil, and Sanku in the Ladakh Union Territory, Drass, the second-coldest place on Earth after Siberia, experienced the first snowfall of the season on Monday. Leh and Kargil areas may get light to moderate snow showers through tomorrow. Additionally, the MeT office advised farmers to delay crop harvesting until October 17. The Met office said that the bad weather could momentarily hamper travel, particularly in susceptible areas like Zojila, Mughal Road, Sinthan Top, Sadnatop, etc. Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif stated that most districts of Jammu & Kashmir might anticipate moderate rain and snow showers on Monday and Tuesday afternoon. A few number of upper reaches may experience significant snowfall.The ski resort of Gulmarg (85%), the tourist destination of Sonamarg (85%), and Pahalgam (55%) also have snowfall prospects. He claimed that most locations in the Kashmir Valley, particularly today, could experience daytime temperatures below 14 °C, and that the Jammu region could also experience a considerable drop in daytime temperatures. Along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, there is a chance of landslides or shooting stones, he added. On Monday, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, reported a minimum temperature of 8.2°C, up from 8.6°C the previous day.According to the MeT office, the low temperature at the north Kashmiri ski resort of Gulmarg was 2.2°C, down from 2.8°C the day before. The temperature in Pahalgam, a well-known tourist resort in south Kashmir, dropped to 3.8°C from 4.5°C the night before. New Delhi, Oct 15: The Army claimed on Sunday that Agniveer Amritpal Singh killed himself while doing sentry duty by shooting himself, and that military honours were not provided to his funeral since deaths caused by self-inflicted wounds are not accorded such honours. According to the Army, it does not make a distinction between soldiers who joined the army before or after the Agnipath system was put into place.There have been claims that because Singh was an Agniveer soldier, military rites were not accorded at his funeral. Singh died while performing sentry duty in the Rajouri sector, according to a statement released by the Army's White Knight Corps, which is based in Nagrota, owing to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Army said in a statement on Sunday night that some "misunderstanding and misrepresentation" of the events surrounding Singh's tragic death had taken place. According to the Indian Army, Agniveer Amritpal Singh's suicide by shooting himself while on sentry duty was a "grave loss to the family and the Indian Army."According to the statement, "in accordance with the established practise, the mortal remains were transported under Army arrangements along with an escort party to the native place for the last rites after conduct of medico-legal procedures." According to the Army, in terms of eligibility for benefits and protocols, the Armed Forces do not distinguish between soldiers who enlisted before or after the adoption of the Agnipath system. According to the statement, "the Armed Forces accord due respect to unfortunate instances of death arising from suicide/self-inflicted injury, irrespective of the type of entry, along with deep and enduring empathy with the family."However, such circumstances are not eligible for military funerals under the current Army Order of 1967, which is in style. Since then, the relevant policy has been continuously followed without discrimination, it said. The Army reported that since 2001, there have been an average of 100 to 140 troops lost each year as a result of suicides or other self-inflicted injuries. In these situations, military funerals have not been provided. According to the statement, financial help and relief payments made in accordance with entitlements—including emergency financial support for holding funerals—are given top priority.Such tragic occurrences of loss weigh heavily on the family and the Forces community as a whole. LG chairs review meeting with Bandipora District Administration

BANDIPORA: Today, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha presided over a review meeting with the Bandipora District Administration to assess the state of the district's infrastructure projects, Centrally supported programmes, and UT sector initiatives. JAMMU: Under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur Dr. Vinod Kumar, Udhampur Police on Sunday recovered a sizable commercial quantity of poppy straw (Bhukki) and detained two people during naka checking at Jakhani naka along the district's highway. According to police, "Police party of Police Station Udhampur while conducting routine vehicle checking at Jakhani National Highway (NH) and intercepted on a vehicle Ashok Leyland (JK04H-3149) coming from Kashmir towards Udhampur."Two smugglers were detained for transporting the illegal poppy straw after the police squad doing the check on the truck discovered 239 kg of it inside."Police added that during questioning, the driver of the truck disclosed his identity as Nazir Ahmed son of Habib Ullah Budoo of Choon, Budgam and his associate Pervaiz son of Abdul Majeed Bhat of Beerwah, Budgam."In this regard, PS Udhampur has filed Case FIR No. 532/2023 U/S 8/15 NDPS Act, and further investigation is ongoing, according to the police.
