LONDON: On Thursday, the UK Parliament observed Jammu & Kashmir Day, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the former princely state's admission to India on October 26, 1947. The Jammu Kashmir Diaspora in the UK organised the event, which was hosted by Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East. Theresa Villiers MP from Chipping Barnet and Jonathan Lord MP from Woking were among the lawmakers in attendance. Maharaja Hari Singh's grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Ajatshatru Singh and Dr. Ritu Singh, were honoured guests for the event.After welcoming the special visitors, MP Jonathan Lord, Dr. Gautam Sen discussed the difficulties the Kashmiri Pandits confront as a result of a lack of political will to support their rehabilitation. The Dogra dynasty was instrumental in creating the princely state of Jammu & Kashmir, according to Ajatshatru Singh. Theresa Villiers highlighted the importance of Jammu Kashmir Day and the advancements made since Article 370 was revoked, while Sushil Pandit talked about the predicament of the Kashmiri Pandit community. In the House of Commons, MP Bob Blackman presented a signed copy of the Instrument of Accession, praised the Indian diaspora for their ongoing observance of this day, and asked Pakistan to put an end to state-sponsored terrorism in order to bring about long-lasting peace in the area. Ritu Singh's optimistic assessment of social and cultural projects that prioritise women's empowerment and regional economic development brought the programme to a close. She gave MPs a piece of Basohli art created by Paper Baag. The success of the event was largely due to the efforts of volunteers like Sonal Sher, Shafalica Bhan Kotwal, Anupama Handoo, Vinod Tikoo, Anupam Fotedar, Lalit Sharma, Pankaj Raina, and others. Political and community activists from the UK, the British Indian community, and the PoJK Diaspora attended. Gadgil, a distinguished professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at UC Berkeley, received the prestigious White House national medal for technology and innovation from Biden on Tuesday in recognition of his work providing communities all over the world with resources necessary for survival.The award, which is given to top US innovators, honours people who have improved America's competitiveness, quality of life, and workforce in technology while also fostering national innovation. Suresh, an at-large professor at Brown University's engineering department, won the National Medal of Science for his innovative work in the physical sciences, life sciences, and engineering. He was especially recognised for his contributions to the field of material science research and its interdisciplinary applications.Gadgil received the White House National Medal for Technology and Innovation, one of twelve awardees. Gadgil has created low-cost solutions for some of the most difficult issues facing the developing world, such as energy-efficient stoves, safe drinking water technology, and methods for lowering the cost of effective electric lighting. He concentrates on reliable ideas that may be used as broadly as feasible; taken as a whole, his efforts have benefited over 100 million people. In addition, Gadgil specialises in computational fluid dynamics of indoor air and pollution flows, as well as building energy efficiency.Gadgil received the award, according to the White House, "for providing life-sustaining resources to communities around the world." His low-cost, inventive innovations address many pressing requirements, such as fuel-efficient cookstoves and drinking water. His artistic endeavours stem from his conviction in the worth of every individual and our capacity to address the most pressing issues of our day. Berkeley Lab researchers have now won two national medals for technology and innovation in addition to Gadgil's 17th overall national medal."There is injustice in the world. I strive to apply my understanding of science, engineering, and creativity to lessen the injustice experienced by those who are disadvantaged. In an interview with Barkley Lab, Gadgil stated, "I think that's fantastic if I can make that difference, go even a little bit in that direction." Gadgil received his PhD from UC Berkeley, his degrees in physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and the University of Bombay (now Mumbai). He then became an affiliate retiree of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) after joining the organisation in 1980 and retiring as a faculty senior scientist earlier this year.Prior to the creation of the Energy technology Area (ETA), he was the division director of the environmental energy technology division. In addition, he teaches civil and environmental engineering at UC Berkeley as a distinguished professor emeritus. In its announcement, the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation praised Suresh for his dedication to international research and teamwork, demonstrating how science can foster mutual understanding and national cooperation.According to a Brown University statement, Suresh expressed his satisfaction with the award, saying he is especially proud of what the medal represents. Along with eight other recipients, Suresh, the former director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), received the coveted science medal. Suresh, who was born in 1956 in India, completed his high school education at the age of 15, then went on to acquire his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering in just two years from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.In 1983, Suresh joined the engineering faculty at Brown University, where he was the youngest member. Following his ten years at Brown, Suresh accepted a nomination from then-President Barack Obama to become the 13th director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), making history as the first Asian-born American to hold such a position. In commemoration of him, Brown's School of Engineering established earlier this month a biennial symposium centred on the boundaries of technology and society. He will return to the school in September 2023. Under his direction, NSF established the Global Research Council, a virtual association of chiefs of funding agencies for science and engineering from over 50 nations, with the goal of promoting international cooperation and data exchange.In addition, he led the creation of the Center-Life Balance programme, which aims to raise the proportion of women holding doctorates in science and engineering from 26% to 40% between 2011 and 2021. India To Treat Pakistan’s Reference To Kashmir At UNSC Meeting “With Contempt It Deserves”

United Nations, Oct 25: India has said that it will not respond to Pakistan's mention of Kashmir in a Security Council meeting about the Israel-Gaza conflict, treating it with the disdain it merits. Ambassador R. Ravindra, India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, made the comments on Tuesday in response to Pakistan's UN ambassador, Munir Akram, bringing up Kashmir at the Security Council meeting over the Middle East crisis. "One delegation made a habitual comment before I finished, referring to Union Territories as essential and inalienable parts of my country," Mr. Ravindra stated."In the interest of time, I would treat these remarks with the contempt they deserve and not dignify them with a response," Mr. Ravindra declared. Prior to this, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the Security Council, stating that all acts of terrorism, regardless of who is carrying them out—Hamas or Lashkar-e-Taiba, the terror group based in Pakistan, or individuals in Mumbai or Kibbutz Beeri—are illegal and indefensible."We have to uphold every country's right to self-defense and stop such atrocities from happening again. Mr. Blinken stated that "no nation in this body, nor any member of this Council, could or would tolerate the slaughter of its people." The United Nations General Assembly and this Council have emphasised time and again that no act of terrorism is legitimate or acceptable. Blinken informed the UN Security Council, "They're illegal and unjustifiable, whether they target individuals in Nairobi, Bali, Istanbul, Mumbai, New York, or Kibbutz Be'eri.Whether they are carried out by Hamas, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Boko Haram, Al Shabaab, ISIS, or Boko Haram, they are all illegal and indefensible. Whether the victims are singled out for their nationality, race, religion, or any other reason, they are illegal and unjustified, Mr. Blinken declared. He emphasised that it is the duty of the Security Council to condemn member nations that provide Hamas with weapons, financial support, or training, as well as "any other terrorist group that carries out such horrific acts." It seemed that Mr. Blinken was alluding to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai on November 26, 2001, which were carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a group based in Pakistan. Israelis can make their own decisions’: Joe Biden

OCT 25, 2023 : President Joe Biden has stated that Israel can make its own decisions in the face of accusations that it is about to launch a ground assault of Gaza, adding that the US stands behind its partner and advises caution. On October 7, Hamas militants launched unprecedented strikes against Israel, resulting in the deaths of over 1,400 people and sparking the latest confrontation. Since 2007, Israel has fought back with great force against the Islamic militant group that has controlled Gaza. On Tuesday, as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was visiting, Biden made the remark in answer to a question. "Are you urging Israel to delay its ground invasion?" After being questioned, Biden said, "The Israelis can make their own decisions."Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant unveiled the Jewish country's three-stage plan last week to alter the "security regime" in Gaza, which implies the elimination of Hamas. According to Gallant, the Israeli Defence Forces (IFD) were conducting aircraft attacks as part of the plan's initial phase. According to him, there will be a ground incursion after that, and then the security regime in Gaza would change. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 5,000 Palestinians—including more than 2,000 children and 1,100 women—as well as journalists, medical professionals, and first responders have been murdered so far, and more than 16,000 have been injured.Reporters were informed by John Kirby, the White House's Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, that the United States will keep making sure Israel has the resources and capacity it needs to protect itself. "We're going to continue to try to get that humanitarian assistance in, and we're going to continue to try to get hostages and people out of Gaza appropriately," he stated. For present, a truce essentially serves the interests of Hamas. That's our current situation. He responded, "And while I appreciate the question, I'm not going to go ahead of the situation. "We have and will continue to talk to our Israeli counterparts about the importance of avoiding and minimising civilian casualties and respecting innocent life and trying to prevent collateral damage as they go after legitimate Hamas targets," he stated. "We're dealing with war, combat, bloodshed, ugliness, and chaos. In the future, innocent bystanders will suffer harm." I wish I had something different to tell you. In answer to a query, Kirby stated, "I wish that wasn't going to happen, but it is going to happen." "That doesn't make it right, it doesn't make it dismissible, it doesn't mean that we aren't going to still express concerns about that and do everything we can to help the Israelis do everything they can to minimise it, but that's unfortunately the nature of conflict," he stated. Following their humiliation by India, Pakistan's bowlers produced another lacklustre performance, putting no pressure on the Afghan batting while holding India to a respectable total of 283 on a difficult and slow-moving Chennai pitch. Afghanistan chased 283—a difficult score on a Chennai surface that offered variable bounce—and won by eight wickets with one over remaining. Afghanistan has now defeated two of cricket's biggest powers, Pakistan (the past world champions) and England (the current champions). Afghanistan's victory moved them up to sixth place in the standings. Pakistan, meanwhile, maintained their fifth-place finish with four points and a net run rate of -0.400.Next up for the flying Afghans is a match against Sri Lanka on October 30 at Pune's Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, which has a high scoring capacity. India-Canada relations going through difficult phase: EAM S Jaishankar

NEW DELHI: Concerns about Canadian officials meddling in New Delhi's affairs prompted India to activate the parity clause in Canada's diplomatic mission there, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday. The minister of external affairs added that if there is improvement in the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada, India is probably going to start issuing visas to citizens of that country again. Following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's accusations last month of a "potential" Indian operative role in the June execution of Khalistani rebel Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the relationship between India and Canada became severely strained.A few days following Trudeau's accusations, India requested that Ottawa reduce its diplomatic presence in the nation and said that it would be temporarily halting the issuing of visas to Canadian citizens. "We would like to resume issuing visas there if we see progress in the safety of our diplomats in Canada," Jaishankar stated at an event in response to a query about relations between India and Canada.Regarding the reduction of Canada's diplomatic representation in India, he stated that the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations clearly guarantees diplomatic parity. The Vienna Convention, the pertinent international law on issue, clearly provides for parity. In our situation, Jaishankar stated, "we invoked parity because we were concerned about ongoing interference in our affairs by Canadian personnel." Forty-one Canadian ambassadors have already left India.In announcing the ambassadors' return from India on Thursday, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said that New Delhi's actions were "contrary to international law" and in breach of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. India has already denied the accusation. According to Jaishankar, the current state of relations between Canada and India is challenging. He also mentioned that certain aspects of Canadian politics are problematic for India.
