Kamala Harris celebrates early Diwali at her residence; says the world is facing a ‘difficult and dark moment’

NOV 09, 2023 : At her official residence, US Vice President Kamala Harris observed Diwali, telling the guests that the globe is currently going through a "difficult and dark moment" as a result of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Harris, who is Indian, celebrated early Diwali at her home on Tuesday. "Diwali is observed during a period of significant events in the world. In her brief remarks, Harris,59, addressed the mostly Indian American guests. "I think it's important that as we celebrate Diwali, which is about celebrating the light, we understand it is always in the context of understanding the contrast between light and dark moments," Harris said."There's no denying that our globe is going through a trying and troubling time in many ways, but especially in light of the pictures in the news that are emerging from Gaza and Israel. And I know it's tragic and devastating for all of us, including me and her husband Doug," she remarked. "I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that President (Joe) Biden and I are fighting for Israel's right to self-defense. We agree that the people of Gaza must get humanitarian relief. We think it's critical to recognise the distinction between Hamas and the Palestinian people. "It is imperative that we prevent the situation in that region from getting worse and that we return the American hostages home. I shall thus say those things knowing full well how crucial it is that we celebrate holidays like Diwali while simultaneously stating the truth and pouring light," she remarked. "I also want to emphasise that the Palestinian people have a right and deserve an opportunity for dignity and self-determination. I've stated this many times and I'll say it again. We'll keep supporting that as well," Harris declared.This year, in contrast to previous, the Vice President did not engage with any of the invited guests—aside from the elected Indian American legislators, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Pramila Jayapal, and Ro Khanna. Numerous organisations have issued a call to boycott Harris' Diwali celebrations in advance. At the Vice President's house, close to 300 people attended the Diwali celebrations. Community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria remarked, "This event beautifully exemplifies the spirit of unity, highlighting the importance of harmony and compassion in times of adversity." "Let us share happiness and love as we get together to celebrate and keep the Jain ideal of 'Live in Peace and Let Others Live in Peace' close to our hearts. The delicious Indian cuisine provided at the event gave an extra layer of happiness to the lively cultural celebrations, bringing us closer together through the tastes and customs that make Diwali so unique, the speaker stated. Bhutoria gave a book about the spiritual path of Jain Acharya Mahapragya, who preached nonviolence and peace, to Vice President Harris's staff. Harris was born to an Indian mother and a Black father, both of whom were immigrants. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a cancer researcher and civil rights activist from Chennai, while her father, Donald Harris, was a native of Jamaica. Gill dethrones Pakistan’s Babar Azam to claim top spot in ICC ODI Rankings

NOV 08, 2023 : Babar Azam was the top-ranked ODI batter in the world until Shubman Gill of India's blistering run in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. On Wednesday, the Men in Blue opener overtook the skipper of Pakistan in the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings. After an explosive start to India's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup campaign, Gill ascended to the top to dethrone Babar. He is now just the fourth player from his nation to hold the No. 1 ODI batter position, following in the footsteps of Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni.The right-hander has amassed 219 runs from six innings at the event thus far in the ongoing campaign, scoring 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa. With eight knocks in the World Cup, the captain of Pakistan has accumulated 282 runs, ending his more than two-year reign as the world's best ODI batter. However, he is now six rating points behind Gill in second place. Virat Kohli, the previous captain, took fourth place in the rankings in the meantime. For the first time in his short but brilliant career, Gill is ranked #1, and Kohli's 543 World Cup runs propel him up three spots to fourth, one rating point ahead of South Africa's opener Quinton de Kock, who is ranked third. Among the ODI batsmen, it is noteworthy that India's Shreyas Iyer jumps from 17 to 18 overall, while Pakistan's opener Fakhar Zaman moves up three spaces to 11th and his Afghan counterpart Ibrahim Zadran moves up six spots to 12th. Sikh separatist Gurpatwant threatens to blow up Air India flight on 19 Nov

NEW DELHI: The founder of the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) organisation, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a designated terrorist, has made a new video in which he begs Sikhs not to board Air India flights after November 19 because they could endanger their lives. He asserted that on November 19, Air India will not be permitted to operate. "We are requesting that Sikhs avoid travelling on Air India. On November 19, there will be an international embargo. Air India will not be permitted to function. Sikhs, refrain from using Air India after November 19. In the video that is making the rounds on social media, Pannun stated, "Your life could be in danger." According to Pannun, the name of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi will change and it would remain closed on November 19. He emphasised that the present Cricket World Cup final match will take place on this same day. "It is the same day in November on which the final match of the World Terror Cup will be played," he stated. "The name of this airport will be Shahid Beant Singh, Shahid Satwant Singh Khalistan airport, when Punjab will be liberated," he stated. Chief of Staff for SFJ Pannun has threatened people before. Amidst a diplomatic spat between India and Canada after the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in September, he called for Hindu-Canadians to leave the country. In a video that went viral on social media, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said that Sikhs who supported Khalistan had continuously demonstrated their allegiance to Canada. He continued by threatening and pressuring Hindus living in Indo-Canada to leave the nation. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun's hate speech went viral, and Hindu Forum Canada's lawyers requested that the Canadian Immigration Minister forbid Pannun from entering the country.The lawyer for Hindu Forum Canada wrote to Mark Miller, Canada's Minister of Immigration, claiming that Pannun's recent remarks have traumatised and distressed both the Hindu community and the Canadian public at large. Hindu Forum Canada is an Ontario-based non-profit humanitarian organisation that promotes laws that improve the lives of minority populations in the country. Khalistani secessionists staged a 'Referendum' in Surrey, British Columbia, earlier in September. The founder of the outlawed Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, attended the Khalistani separatist assembly at the Guru Nanak Singh Gurudwara in Surrey, Vancouver. Using menacing language, Pannun made a provocative statement directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and other prominent figures. He asserted that India's territorial integrity was being threatened by separatists. Notably, after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that "agents of the Indian government" were involved in Nijjar's June death, relations between India and Canada have deteriorated. In a tit-for-tat move over Canada's decision, India had denied the claims as "absurd and motivated" and expelled a Canadian envoy. To date, Canada has not made available any proof to the public regarding the killing of Nijjar. [caption id="attachment_5037" align="alignnone" width="249"] Sikh separatist Gurpatwant threatens to…
