Bovine smugglers attack cops, 2 injured

JAMMU, Apr 9: Two police personnel were injured after a police team came under attack during an operation against alleged bovine smuggling in the Miran Sahib area here this evening, officials said.Those injured have been identified as ASI Vipan Kumar and SPO Gharu Ram, both posted at Police Station Miran Sahib.
Officials said acting on specific inputs, a police team led by SHO Miran Sahib, Inspector Jatinder Singh, intercepted a truck trailer near Dak Bungalow Maralian.
As the vehicle was stopped, a large number of people gathered at the spot and started pelting stones at the police team, resulting in injuries to the two personnel, they said.
The injured cops were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where they are responding to the treatment, officials said.
Meanwhile, to bring the situation under control, they said, police resorted to aerial firing in self-defence to disperse the crowd.
A police officer said during the operation, 24 bovine animals were rescued and the vehicle used for transporting them was also seized.
“An FIR is also being registered under relevant sections of law against those involved in the attack on police and illegal smuggling of animals,” he said.
