JAN 08, 2024 : With her Awami League party winning an overwhelming majority in the general elections tainted by intermittent violence and a boycott by the main opposition BNP and its allies, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has earned a record fourth consecutive term in office. 223 seats were gained by Hasina's party in the 300-seat Parliament. There were 299 seats up for election. A candidate's death has resulted in a postponed election for one seat, per media sources. The Jatiya Party, which is the biggest opposition in Parliament, gained 11 seats; the Bangladesh Kallyan party won one seat; and 62 seats went to independent candidates. Each party got one seat: the Workers Party of Bangladesh and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. Hasina, seventy-six.also the Awami League president, won the Gopalganj-3 constituency with a resounding victory, earning her a seventh term in parliament. In the contentious elections held in February 1996, the turnout was 26.5%, the lowest in Bangladesh's history.The Election Commission anticipated that the final tally might stand at about 40% when voting closed at 4:00 pm on Sunday. Migratory birds transform Jammu’s Gharana wetland into ‘bird-watching paradise’

JAMMU: Thousands of migratory birds, from egrets to bar-headed geese, descend on the Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve near the International Border in the outskirts of Jammu city each year in a stunning natural occurrence. About 6,000 bar-headed geese and other species from the northern hemisphere travel to the marsh, which is about 35 km from Jammu, every winter, making it a "haven for bird enthusiasts." Over 6,000 different kinds of migrating birds, mostly bar-headed geese, make their annual visit to the Gharana Wetland. Over 3,000 to 4,000 of these birds have flown in from the northern hemisphere this year. The Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve's (GWCR) in-charge, Simple Singh, stated that more of them are anticipated.According to him, the quantity of migrating birds using this winter habitat rises year. We came here to view the migratory birds because my maternal uncle had told me about their flying to Gharana," he added. Over Rs 67 lac penalty imposed on 2 stone crushers for illegal mining in Ujh River

KATHUA: Magnum Stone Crusher and SK Stone Crusher were fined more than Rs 67 lakh for engaging in illicit mining in the Ujh River today. District Mineral Officer (DMO) Rajinder Singh levied the fine following the measuring of several pits surrounding stone crushers, wherein minor minerals were extracted and removed for further processing. The DMO reported that earlier on social media, a number of complaints and videos showing these stone crushers engaging in illicit excavation with the use of large JCB chainsaws appeared. A team of mineral guards was assigned by the DMO to gather information and proof after they took geotagged images and videos of every illicit mining location near the stone crushers.Following the computation of the penalty, the owners of stone crushers received notices requiring them to deposit the entire sum within seven days in addition to stern warnings to follow the regulations set forth by the Geology and Mining department. The DMO further disclosed that routine operations are carried out in the local Khads of Mager, Sahar, Ujh, Ravi, Tarnah, Bhini, and Mager Rivers, where stone crushers and mineral leases are located. Amit Shah to visit Jammu on Jan 9, to take part in development programmes

JAMMU: According to sources, the Union Home Minister will visit Jammu on Tuesday. While there, he would attend several activities pertaining to development and launch the city's e-bus service. Shah is making his first trip to Jammu and Kashmir after militants at Poonch on December 21 ambushed two army trucks, killing five troops and wounding two more. According to a home ministry official, the home minister would visit Jammu on January 9 and preside over a review meeting on the complete development of Jammu and Kashmir.In addition, Shah will start an e-bus service, introduce the central government's "Vikas Bharat Sankalp Yatra," and set the groundwork for a number of development projects. SRINAGAR, Jan 7: In the company of party leader Mehbooba Mufti, seasoned politician Muzaffar Hussain Baig re-joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday, according to reports. At a PDP-hosted event in the Jammu and Kashmir region of Anantnag to mark the eighth anniversary of party founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's passing, Baig became a member of the party. Additionally, he performed fatiha, or special prayers, at Sayeed's mausoleum in the district of South Kashmir's Bijbhera. According to party spokesperson Mohit Bhan, "Baig has returned to the PDP."After Sayeed passed away in 2016, Baig, a co-founder of the PDP in the late 1990s, became the party's patron. In 2020, Baig, a former deputy chief minister, left the party and was predicted to join Sajad Lone's People's Conference. Baig, a former member of the Lok Sabha from Baramulla, did not formally disclose his position, even though his wife Safina joined Lone's party.
