Budget session extended by a day till Feb 10: LS Speaker Om Birla

NEW DELHI: Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla said on Wednesday that the budget session of Parliament has been adjourned to February 10 by one day. Otherwise, the session, which started on January 31 and ended on February 9, was scheduled to terminate. Speaking on Tuesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that the government would present a "white paper" contrasting the conditions of the Indian economy prior to and following the BJP's victory over the Congress in 2014. It was thought necessary to prolong the session's duration by one day due to the agenda items that included the Finance Bill, budget discussion, demand for grants, and white paper that still needed to be tabled. The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has frequently accused the Congress-led UPA of leaving the nation in a deplorable economic state, but Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will give the "white paper" outlining how the current administration turned things around. Jammu-Srinagar National Highway Opens For Traffic

JAMMU, Feb 7: The vital Jammu-Srinagar national highway saw traffic return on Wednesday after being blocked for renovation. According to representatives of the traffic department, the highway opened this morning. According to officials, heavy motor vehicle (HMV) traffic would be restricted, but light motor vehicle (LMV) movement from Srinagar and Jammu will be permitted on the highway. The highway was damaged earlier this week in several locations due to shooting stones and landslides, with the Sherbibi stretch in the Ramban area suffering the worst damage. Punjab Police Arrests 3 Terror Associates

Chandigarh, Feb 7: A senior police official announced on Wednesday that three terrorists' comrades, Lakhbir Singh Landa and Harwinder Singh Rinda, had been taken into custody in Punjab. Rinda is based in Pakistan, but Landa is based in Canada. According to Punjab Police Director General Gaurav Yadav, the Anti-Gangster Task Force also found two handguns and ten cartridges in their hands. CRPF Battalion holds free medical camp at Channi Rama

JAMMU: The 76 CRPF Battalion, in association with the J&K Health Department, arranged a free medical camp at Shiv Shakti Mandir, Channi Rama, as part of its Civic Action Programme. Under the direction of Sandeep Khirwar, IG Jammu Sector, and Ramesh Kumar, DIG Range Jammu, the camp was hosted. T.H. Khan, Commandant-76 Bn, oversaw the camp, which was set up with the intention of providing free medical care and education about healthy living habits to the area's impoverished population. A group of two medical officers, Dr. S. Sowmiya from the 76th Battalion of the CRPF and Dr. Neeyati Abrol from the Medical Camp, performed free medical examinations and gave away free medications to about 350 civilians. The Civic Action Programme was launched by DIG Jammu Range Ramesh Kumar. T.H. Khan, Commandant-76Bn, made a plea to everyone in the community to keep physically fit by engaging in regular exercise and raised awareness of the need of maintaining good cleanliness and a healthy lifestyle on this occasion. 4 students involved in ragging suspended in GMC Rajouri

RAJOURI: The administration of Medical College Rajouri sent a strong message to all students pursuing medical courses at GMC Rajouri by suspending students involved in a brawl and ragging from all classes and hostels for a period of four weeks. Veteran journalist and Sahitya Akademi winner Farooq Nazki passes away at 83

SRINAGAR: Tuesday saw the death of veteran broadcaster, poet, and Sahitya Akademi winner Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki in a Katra hospital. He was eighty-three. Nazki, who had a number of prominent roles at Doordarshan and All India Radio Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday night following a heart attack, according to family members. Two girls and a son survive him. According to the sources, he had moved to live with his son in Jammu because he had not been doing well for a few years. In 1995, Nazki's poetry collection Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas (Fire in the eyelashes) won him the Sahitya Academi award in Kashmiri. The sources claimed that Nazki, who also served as Omar Abdullah's and Farooq Abdullah's media advisor, would be buried on Wednesday at the Malkha cemetery in this city. They added that the body was being transported from Srinagar to Jammu. Various groups have expressed their condolences for the legendary journalist's demise. Lok Sabha takes up bills to include ‘Valmiki’ in list of SCs in J&K, expand list of Scheduled Tribes

NEW DELHI: 'Valmiki' was added to the list of Scheduled Castes in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in 1956, and the Lok Sabha on Tuesday took up a bill to alter that order. A bill to add the communities of "Gadda Brahmin," "Koli," "Paddari Tribe," and "Pahari Ethnic Group" to the list of Scheduled Tribes in relation to Jammu and Kashmir was also taken up by the Lok Sabha. The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order Bill 2023 was moved for discussion and passage in the House by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar. The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill 2023 was introduced in the House by Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda.According to officials, the Valmiki community—a synonym for Chura, Bhangi, Balmiki, and Mehtar—has been suggested for inclusion at serial number 5 in the list of Scheduled Castes of Jammu and Kashmir's Union territory. The "Valmiki" addition to the Schedule of the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order, 1956 is proposed by the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023. The officials stated that the "Pahari Ethnic Group," "Koli," "Paddari Tribe," and "Gadda Brahmin" populations have all petitioned to be added to the list of Scheduled Tribes by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023 suggests making changes to the 1989 Scheduled Tribes Order in the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir.
