CHHATTISGARH: Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, saying that its two-point platform promotes injustice and incites violence and intolerance. Gandhi was speaking at a public gathering in Rengalpali hamlet, located in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, following his entry into the state from Odisha with his "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra." He also took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arguing that because the then-BJP administration in Gujarat had added his caste, the "ghanchi," to the list of Other Backward Classes in 2000, he was not an OBC by birth. "The BJP's two-point programme is to encourage injustice and spread hatred and violence," said Gandhi. The Bharat Jodo Yatra, which took place in 2022–23, travelled 4,000 kilometres from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in protest of the BJP's efforts to incite hatred and foster violence. He remarked that in order to seek justice for the people, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has now begun. Gandhi reiterated his party's call for a caste census, asking, "If Modi ji is right and there are just two castes in India—the poor and the rich—then why did he become an OBC?Modi ji is not an OBC by birth. When the BJP administration in Gujarat was in power in 2000, Modi ji's caste, the ghanchi, was included to the OBC (category). The OBC was not your PM's source. He continues to refer to him as an OBC, but in reality, he belonged to the general category caste. Explosives Recovered In J&K Sopore

SRINAGAR, Feb 8: On Thursday, agents of the law retrieved explosives from the town of Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir. "In a major development, police recovered a cache of explosive materials from a house in the Kraknshiven colony in Sopore," said a police statement.The police carried out a targeted operation and seized materials that were suspected of being used in the production of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. "Today around 8 a.m., an operation named Caso was initiated by Police station Tarzoo and 52 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF at Kraknkshiven village in connection with Fir No. 307/2023 of police station Sopore," the police said."At the residence of Rashid Najar, the brother of the terrorist Qayoom Najar of Kalrankshivan Sopore, explosive material, IEDs, a rusted pistol with a magazine, and ammunition of SLR/AK47/pistol were found during the search."Rashid Najar is in custody.The recovery highlights the police's continued efforts to keep the community safe and guard against possible threats. JHARSUGUDA, Feb 8: On Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "misleading" people by claiming to be an OBC while, in reality, he was not born into an Other Backward Class family. On the third and last day of his "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra" in Odisha, Gandhi made a brief speech here in which he stated that Modi "was born in a family that belonged to the general caste." "By falsely claiming to be an OBC, Modi ji has been fooling the public. His family was of the Teli caste, which was listed as an OBC during the 2000 Gujarati administration led by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Modi ji is therefore not an OBC by birth, the Congress MP claimed.Gandhi further claimed that the prime minister "hugs billionaires" rather than shaking hands with OBCs. Mercury plummets in J&K as Srinagar, Jammu record lowest Feb temp in decade

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir saw a dip in mercury on Thursday, with Srinagar recording minus 5.2°C and 3.6°C, respectively. These are the capital cities' second-lowest February minimum temperatures in a decade. According to a representative of the meteorological department, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.2°C, which was lower than the previous night's low of minus 2.0°C and 4.8°C below average for this time of year for J&K's summer capital. According to the official, the capital city's all-time low temperature was reached on February 6, 1985, when the mercury dropped to minus 20°C. On February 9, 2019, Srinagar recorded minus 5.7°C. According to him, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.4°C as opposed to minus 3.2°C the night before. According to the MeT official, the minimum temperature was 4.9°C lower than usual for Kashmir's gateway town. Pahalgam saw a low of minus 11.9°C, which was 5.7°C below average for the well-known south Kashmir resort, compared to minus 10.8°C the night before. RBI leaves repo rate unchanged for sixth straight occassions

MUMBAI: At its February review meeting, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee unanimously agreed to maintain the status quo, with the policy repo rate remaining at 6.5% for the sixth consecutive meeting. The interest rate at which the RBI loans money to other banks is known as the repo rate. Following a three-day review meeting, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das discussed the policy statement on Friday morning. He cited stable growth dynamics and moderate inflation as justifications for keeping the monetary stance as it is. According to Das, growth is holding up better than anticipated and inflation is getting closer to the target. While retail inflation in India is over the desired 4 percent scenario, it is still within the RBI's comfortable range of 2 to 6 percent.December had a 5.69 percent figure. According to Das, the MPC also resolved, with a majority of five out of six members, to continue concentrating on the removal of accommodation in order to guarantee that inflation gradually approaches the objective while promoting growth. In the July-September quarter of the current fiscal year 2023–24, the Indian economy increased by 7.6%, continuing to be the fastest-growing major economy. India's GDP increased by 7.8% during the April–June quarter. The RBI's bi-monthly monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting got underway on Tuesday and will last for three days. With the exception of the most recent pauses, the RBI has increased the repo rate to 6.5% from May 2022 by a total of 250 basis points in an effort to combat inflation. SRINAGAR: A Punjabi worker who was hurt in the terror assault in the city's Habba Kadal neighbourhood passed away at a local hospital on Thursday, bringing the total number of victims in the attack to two. At the SKIMS Hospital here this morning, Rohit Masih passed away from his wounds. His health at the SMHS Hospital grew worse, and late on Wednesday night, according to the officials, he was sent to the tertiary care facility. On Wednesday, Amritpal Singh, a worker from Punjab, too perished in the terrorist shooting at Shalla Kadal near Habba Kadal. It was the year's first intentional killing. In 2023, there were three attacks by the terrorists on non-local workers, which left two people dead and three injured.While Mukesh Kumar, a brick kiln worker from Bihar, was shot and killed by ultras on October 31, 2018, in Pulwama district, a circus worker from Udhampur district was killed by terrorists on May 30, 2023, in Anantnag district. NEW DELHI: As per sources, the Congress party is anticipated to present a 'Black Paper' in response to the 'White Paper' that the national government is expected to present during the current Parliamentary budget session. Police arrests bovine smuggler with sharp edged weapons

SAMBA: In the intervening night of February 6 and 7, Samba police apprehended a notorious cattle smuggler brandishing a sharp-edged weapon, rescued eleven bovines, and seized three vehicles, including a Scorpio. All of these incidents occurred within the jurisdiction of Police Station (PS) Ghagwal. During their vehicle checking duty at Naka NHW Tapyal, a police party from Police Station (PS), Ghagwal, led by SHO PS Ghagwal, motioned for a Scorpio car with registration number DL4CNB-5060 to stop for inspection. However, the driver increased his speed, struck a barricade, and left the naka point. The car was pursued by the vigilant police naka team, who stopped it a short distance from naka point.When the car was being inspected, it was discovered that two cows that were being transported illegally and without authorization were loaded inside the Scorpio car. One "toka" has also been found in the custody of the infamous bovine smuggler, Jamat Ali alias Kalu, son of Siraj Din of Maralian, Miran Sahib tehsil RS Pura district Jammu. Jamat Ali has been detained. At Police Station Ghagwal, a case FIR No. 12/2024 U/S 307/188 IPC, 11 PCA Act, 4/25 Arms Act, and 3 PDPP Act has been registered, and an investigation has begun. Two further attempts to smuggle cattle have been thwarted in a collaborative operation involving Police Post (PP) Rajpura, Border Police Post Babber Nallah, and Border Police Post Mawa. Both the vehicle with registration number PB07BX-3253, loaded with four cows, and the vehicle with registration number PB13BM-8857, laden with five bovines, were stopped close to Madwal and Madoon, respectively, and all nine cows were saved. Nevertheless, by taking advantage of the darkness, the drivers of both cars were able to flee the scene. At Police Station Ghagwal, cases FIR Nos. 13/2024 and 14/2024 under Sections 188 IPC and 11 PCA Act have been recorded, and an investigation has begun.
