India has nearly 97 crore voters now, says EC

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission announced on Friday that there will be nearly 97 crore Indian voters who can cast ballots in the Lok Sabha elections this year. Additionally, it stated that the voter list now includes nearly two crore youthful voters, or those between the ages of 18 and 29. Since the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2019, there has been a 6% rise in the number of registered voters. "The largest electorate in the world 96.88 crore are registered to vote for the forthcoming General Elections in India," claimed the Election Commission. According to the poll panel, the gender ratio grew from 940 in 2023 to 948 in 2024. An official noted that the Commission has placed a specific focus on the integrity and health of the electoral roll in addition to disclosures and openness in the roll updating process. At a news conference in Pune, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar had described the different activities associated with updating the electoral records and the involvement of political parties at each step. J&K Police seize 8 quintals of illegally procured rice in Budgam, 04 accused arrested

Two Terrorist Hideouts Unearthed In Baramulla

Srinagar, Feb 9: According to officials on Friday, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore area have discovered two terrorist hideouts and have also retrieved a cache of weapons and ammunition. According to the officials, during the search operation that turned up the weapons and ammunition haul, two suspected terror associates were also taken into custody. They claimed that during their investigation into a terror-related case in the vicinity of the Sopore authorities Station last year, authorities found useful information.Security personnel discovered a concrete bunker when they conducted a search of the home of terrorist commander Abdul Qayoom Najar, who was killed. "During the search, weapons and ammunition, including IEDs, pistols, pistol magazines, live ammunition, and other incriminating electronic items, were recovered from a secret concrete hideout inside Abdul Rashid Najar's residential house," the officials stated. No Relief From Intense Cold In Kashmir, Jammu Temp Below Normal

SRINAGAR, Feb 9: Due to a bright night sky, Kashmir saw extreme cold on Friday, with the minimum temperature in Jammu division remaining below average. According to a release from the Meteorological (MeT) Department, the minimum temperature was minus 4.8 in Srinagar, minus 9 in Gulmarg, and minus 10.3 in Pahalgam. The lowest temperature in the Ladakh region was minus 16.1 in Leh town and minus 19.8 in Kargil. At 2 in Banihal, Bhaderwah minus 1.6, Katra 5.8, Batote 3.3, and Jammu city's 5.3 was the lowest temperature of the night. Since the MeT office has predicted dry weather with clear skies through February 14th, the extreme cold is probably going to linger for at least an additional four to five days. Haldwani Violence | DM Says Incident Not Communal, Demolition Peaceful, Mob Attacked Force

Nainital, Feb 9:  Following an anti-encroachment sweep on Thursday, violence broke out in Banbhoolpura, Haldwani, Uttarakhand. As a result, security has been increased in the area plagued by violence. Nainital District Magistrate Vandana Singh expressed profound concern about the Haldwani violent event, calling it regrettable and promising that the perpetrators will be identified and faced with severe consequences. Singh advised everyone not to turn the incident into a sensitive or communal matter, stressing that it was not communal in character. "Two people have died, as far as official information is concerned," DM Singh stated.The DM clarified that the property was uninhabited, refuting rumours that it was a madrasa. The two buildings on the vacant lot are not recognised as religious buildings by any means, nor are they registered as such. "Some refer to the building as a madrasa," she continued. The demolition drive began amicably, according to the DM, but stones were thrown at the Municipal Corporation personnel. According to the DM, the forces' attack was prearranged. "The demolition drive began amicably, with the force being used to prevent...The team from our Municipal Corporation was attacked with stones.It was intended for the forces to be attacked on the day of the demolition drive.The first mob, which was carrying stones, dispersed, while the second mob entered carrying petrol bombs. Our staff did not use any force, and this was an unwarranted incident," she stated. She went on, "You can see (in the video) that the administration and the police force are not provoking or harming anybody." The DM stated that many locations have seen action taken against encroachment following the HC's directive. This was not a singular incident, nor was it directed towards a specific resource.
