Impact Of Rs 2,000 Notes Withdrawal: Currency-In-Circulation Growth Dips To 3.7% In Feb

Mumbai, Feb 25: The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to remove Rs 2,000 banknotes had an impact on the growth in money in circulation, which slowed to 3.7% for the week ending February 9 from 8.2% a year earlier. Notes and coins in circulation are referred to as currency-in-circulation (CiC), whereas notes and coins in circulation less cash held by banks is referred to as currency with the public. The RBI claims that double-digit rise in deposits was reported by commercial banks in January, and that this increase is also related to the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 in currency notes. According to RBI data, the growth of Reserve Money (RM) slowed to 5.8% on February 9, 2024, from 11.2% on the same day the previous year (8.8% adjusted for the first-round impact of changes to the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR). CiC, bank deposits at the RBI, and other deposits with the central bank are components of RM. Due to the elimination of Rs 2,000 in banknotes, the increase in CiC, the largest component of RM, slowed to 3.7% from 8.2% a year earlier, according to the RBI. The RBI declared on May 19, 2023, that banknotes with a face value of Rs 2,000 will no longer be in circulation. As of January 31, only roughly Rs 8,897 crore worth of Rs 2,000 banknotes remained in circulation, with nearly 97.5% of the notes having been returned to the banking system. When the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 banknotes was announced on May 19, 2023, at the close of business, the total amount of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. The initial request was made to the public and entities in possession of these notes to exchange them or place them in bank accounts by September 30, 2023. Later, the deadline was moved until October 7, 2023. On October 7, 2023, deposit and exchange services were terminated at bank branches.Beginning on October 8, 2023, people would have the option of exchanging their cash or having the equal amount credited to their bank accounts at any one of the 19 RBI locations. November 2016 saw the introduction of the Rs 2,000 banknotes, which replaced the then-current Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes.   [caption id="attachment_11702" align="alignnone" width="300"] Impact Of Rs 2,000 Notes Withdrawal: Currency-In-Circulation Growth Dips To 3.7% In Feb[/caption]

Matter Of Shame That Elections In J&K Had To Be Announced By Supreme Court: Omar Abdullah

NEW DELHI, Feb 25: Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, called it "a matter of considerable shame" that the Supreme Court, not the Election Commission of India, was required to issue an order on elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The head of the National Conference also stated that it was incorrect to believe that Article 370 was the primary cause of all of J&K's issues and that terrorist assaults were now occurring in places that had previously been free of terrorism, notably the hills of Jammu, Rajouri, and Poonch. Speaking on Saturday at the Ideas of India Summit 3.0 hosted Abdullah questioned, "What is the BJP and what is the Government of India going to do about the deadline the Supreme Court has set?" pointing out that the court had declared that Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections were to take place by the end of September 2024. Abdullah stated, "It is a great disgrace that the Supreme Court had to declare the results of the elections in Jammu and Kashmir instead of the Election Commission or the Government of India."The Supreme Court affirmed the Center's decision in December of last year to repeal Article 370, which had granted the former state of Jammu and Kashmir a special status, but it also ordered that statehood be restored "as soon as possible." It stated that assembly elections ought to take place before September 30, 2024. Abdullah added that terror assaults targeting Pandits in Kashmir are commonplace in the Valley. He claimed that even after Article 370 was repealed, there are still pockets of separatist support and that there is rarely more than a week or two between terrorist attacks. He said that under the current (Union) government, more Kashmiri Pandits had been slain in targeted attacks than under prior administrations.The former chief minister further asserted that the Pandits from Kashmir, who were resettled by his government with government jobs in the Valley, are now begging to be let to return to Jammu. "Kashmiri Pandits no longer feel secure in their surroundings thanks to this regime. More Pandits from Kashmir wish to flee the region now than they did five or ten years ago, Abdullah continued., he asserted that during the current government's mandate, more Kashmiri Pandits had lost their lives in targeted attacks in the Valley than in previous times.   [caption id="attachment_11696" align="alignnone" width="300"] Matter Of Shame That Elections In J&K Had To Be Announced By Supreme Court: Omar…
