Present UNSC Does Not Reflect Today’s Reality: UNGA President

NEW DELHI, Jan 24: Dennis Francis, the president of the U.N. General Assembly, stated on January 24 that reform of the U.N. Security Council is necessary since its current makeup does not accurately reflect the geopolitical landscape of today's globe. He stated at a press conference soon after speaking with S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, that the Security Council has become increasingly incapable of making decisions in recent years to improve international peace and security. While in India for a five-day visit, Ambassador Francis emphasised the importance of UN Security Council reform. "It is imperative that the UN Security Council be reformed," he declared, adding that he discussed the matter with Mr. Jaishankar as well. India has been adamant on seeing changes made to the UN, particularly to the Security Council. The absence of significant progress in the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform has infuriated New Delhi in particular. India is a serious candidate to join the UN Security Council permanently. Currently, the General Assembly of the United Nations elects 10 non-permanent members for two-year terms, while there are five permanent members of the UNSC. Russia, the United States, China, France, and the United Kingdom are the five permanent members, and they each have the power to veto any significant resolution.The president of the United Nations General Assembly praised India as well for helping the African Union become a full member of the G20. "India's leadership in the international arena is evident in its outreach to Africa, especially in facilitating the African Union's membership in the G20," stated Francis. "There is no doubt in anyone's mind about it." More importantly, he continued, "it showed India's long-standing commitment to support and facilitate development in the Global South." Francis, a member of Trinidad and Tobago's diplomatic corps, declared peace, prosperity, advancement, and sustainability to be among his top priorities as president. "Rebuilding trust and reigniting solidarity" is the subject of his 78th United Nations General Assembly presidency. UP Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, DG Law & Order Prashant Kumar, and local officials supervised the events and made sure the devotees had a seamless experience, all in accordance with orders from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Senior Army officer visits forward areas in Kashmir; reviews operational preparedness

SRINAGAR: On Wednesday, officials in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir stated that a senior army officer had visited advanced areas along the Line of Control (LoC) to assess the readiness of the counter-infiltration grid ahead of Republic Day. According to reports, on Tuesday, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, the General Officer Commanding of the Army's 15 Corps, reviewed the operational readiness and counter-infiltration grid while touring the forward areas in the Gurez sector of Bandipora district. Due to insufficient snowfall in Kashmir's higher regions this winter, security officials are worried that terrorists may infiltrate the valley. Terrorist infiltration is less likely during the winter months as the mountain passes along the LoC are typically blocked by a lot of snowfall.But the counter-infiltration grid has increased the vigilance along the LoC due to the dry winter. When speaking with the troops, Lt Gen. Ghai urged them to stay "in a high state of operational readiness" in adverse weather and on difficult terrain. “No alliance in Bengal” says Mamata Banerjee, big dent to INDIA bloc hopes

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee, said that her party would contest the Trinamool Congress alone in Bengal on Wednesday, dealing a severe blow to the INDIA alliance. "I didn't talk to the Congress party. We shall fight alone in Bengal, as I have always declared. The TMC chief stated, "We are a secular party and we alone will defeat BJP in Bengal. I am not concerned about what will be done in the country." "I made a lot of suggestions, but they were immediately turned down. We have since made the decision to run in Bengal alone for the elections.In addition, the Bengal Chief Minister asserted that, in contrast to the Congress's assertions that they had invited INDIA bloc parties to participate in the Yatra, she was unaware that Rahul Gandhi's Nyay Yatra was going through Bengal. "Despite the fact that I am a member of the INDIA bloc, they did not even think it appropriate to notify me in advance that they would be visiting West Bengal. Thus, insofar as Bengal is concerned, there is no relationship with me," Mamata Banerjee stated. "At the national level, we will determine the course of action. Our party is secular. We'll do every effort to overthrow the BJP. There is no single party that makes up the partnership. We have stated that they ought to fight in some states while the regional parties are permitted to fight on their own in the remaining states. They shouldn't become involved, she continued. Trinamool and the Congress broke down as a result of state unit president Adhir Ranjan Chowdury's ongoing criticism of the chief minister of Bengal. Adhir Chowdhury asserted during a press conference on Tuesday that Mamata Banerjee only became the state's chief minister in 2011 because of Congress's intervention. "The polls will not be held under Mamata Banerjee's sway this time. In the two seats where Mamata Banerjee is stepping down, the Congress defeated the BJP and TMC. The Congress party is skilled at running for office. The Congress MP claimed, "Mamta Banerjee is an opportunist who came to power in 2011 with the mercy of Congress." In an attempt to mitigate the harm caused by the state unit chief's persistent attacks, Rahul Gandhi, who is currently in Assam as part of his Nyay Yatra, stated that he had a cordial relationship with the TMC chief. "I don't want to comment right now; the seat-sharing negotiations are still under progress. However, Mamata Banerjee and I get along well. There are moments when our leaders speak, their leaders speak, and so on. It is a normal occurrence. Rahul Gandhi had stated on Tuesday that "such remarks won't matter and these are not things that are going to disrupt things." Of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal, the Trinamool Congress allegedly offered the Congress a maximum of three seats. The TMC secured 22 Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress secured two seats in the 2019 elections. Mamata Banerjee's declaration on Wednesday that she was going it alone seems to have slammed the door for the Congress in Bengal. Creating coalitions has proven to be difficult for the INDIA bloc, and it currently seems unlikely that the alliance would be able to present a unified front against the BJP.
