Asia Cup: India-Pak clash moves to reserve day after rain plays spoilsport again

COLOMBO: The Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match between India and Pakistan has been postponed to a reserve day due to inclement weather on Sunday that prevented play after 24.1 overs. Today’s performance was postponed for about four hours due to the return of the rain. India will pick off where they left off tomorrow. At the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the heavens opened up just as India, led by opening duo Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, were comfortably batting at 147 for the loss of two wickets. Earlier, Rohit and Shubman put up a fantastic performance, hammering the Pakistani bowlers for 121 runs in a quick-fire partnership. After the India openers set the Pakistan openers on a leather hunt in the opening overs, Shaheen Shaf Afridi and Shadab Khan each claimed a wicket to help the Pakistanis get back into the game. Shadab’s soft dismissal of Rohit (56) was followed by Gill’s (58) death in the following over when he failed to read a slower delivery from Shaheen and lobbed a catch to Agha Salman at extra cover. When play was halted due to rain, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul appeared to have stabilised the innings. When the umpires halted play, Kohli (8)* and KL Rahul (17)* were still in tact at the crease. The two sides also faced off in the group stage, with India scoring 266 in the first innings. This was the second occasion in the competition that rain jeopardised a match between the longtime rivals. After then, though, the game was cancelled due to weather. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Friday did, however, announce a reserve day for the Super Four match, unlike the last match. Virat and Rahul will resume the Indian team’s batting at 147/2 in 24.1 overs.
