JAMMU, Jan 15: With a goal of generating 300 MW of electricity from solar power by 2025, some 20,000 government buildings will have solar rooftop installations. The government has set a target of producing 300 MW of electricity by 2025, according to official sources who stated on Monday that the departments under government control in Jammu and Kashmir will receive their electrical supply from solar energy. The Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) will carry out rooftop solar projects on as many as 20,000 government buildings, according to official sources. They disclosed that as of right now, 1900 government buildings had rooftop solar projects installed, producing 27.61 MW of electricity. “JAKEDA and other sister concern departments have assisted in the establishment of these projects,” they stated, mentioning that the combined load of government-affiliated institutions is approximately 600 MW. “The load of the government related entities, including hospitals, schools, colleges, universities, defence establishments, and street lights, aside from 22,49,4 registered government offices, is approximately 600 MW out of the approximately 4000 MW load with JPDCL,” they stated.“The J&K government will save approximately Rs 700 crore annually if only 50% of the energy needs are met through rooftop solar projects. Approximately 15 percent of energy is consumed by the government establishments, which is estimated to be 3000 million units of electricity annually,” they continued. According to official sources, educational institutions with greater potential for solar power generation, such as Kashmir University, National Institute of Technology, and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, will also experience a decrease in their electricity consumption and consequent financial burden. “Government departments’ increased electricity load will be relieved by reducing their electricity consumption,” they stated.Official sources stated, “Several government departments are still not submitting their monthly electricity bills, despite the fact that the outstanding dues of various government departments are worth crores, which were waived off under a scheme.” “In the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security, low-carbon emission, economic growth, and prosperity, JAKEDA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and hydrogen energy,” the statement reads.
