NEW DELHI: The retirement fund regulator EPFO has declared that Aadhaar will no longer be accepted as verification of birthdate. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) stated in an official circular on January 16 that the elimination of Aadhaar was decided upon in accordance with a mandate from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The circular states that Aadhaar is also being taken from the list of documents where the date of birth can be corrected. In a December 22, 2023, circular from the UIDAI, it was stated that while an Aadhaar number can be used to verify an individual’s identification, it is not a means of proving one’s date of birth in and of itself. According to UIDAI, numerous high courts have made it clear in recent rulings that Aadhaar is insufficient as evidence of date of birth. A birth certificate from the Registrar of Births and Deaths, a marksheet from an accredited university or government board, and a PAN (Permanent Account Number) card are among the many papers that can be used as legal evidence of birthdate.
