NEW DELHI, Jan 13: The Union health ministry stated on Saturday that although there are now only 3,238 current cases of COVID-19 in India, 441 new infections have been reported. The ministry updated its data at 8 am, and no deaths were reported in a 24 hour period. Up until December 5, there were double digits of cases per day. However, with the arrival of a new COVID-19 variety, JN.1, and the cold weather, the number of cases started to grow once more. Following December 5, December 31, 2023, saw the largest single-day increase of 841 cases, or 0.2% of the peak instances recorded in May 2021.Approximately 92% of the 3,238 current patients are being treated at home in isolation. An official source stated, “The data that is currently available suggests that the JN.1 variant is not leading to an exponential rise in new cases nor a surge in hospitalisation and mortality.” Three waves of COVID-19 have struck India in the past; the Delta wave, which is expected to last from April to June 2021, has the highest daily case and fatality rate. On May 7, 2021, 4,14,188 instances and 3,915 deaths were recorded, marking the peak. Over 4.5 crore people have been afflicted and over 5.3 lakh have perished nationwide since the outbreak started in early 2020.According to the ministry’s website, nearly 4.4 crore individuals have recovered from the illness, meaning that the country’s recovery rate is 98.81 percent. The website states that 220.67 crore doses of the COVID-19 vaccination have been given out nationwide thus far.
