SRINAGAR, Dec 30: Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Divya D, today stated that 88 drug peddlers were arrested, and cases were filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against 56 notorious drug dealers throughout 2024.
Addressing a year-end press briefing, the SP said the total value of seized contraband during the year amounted to Rs 65,07,822, while the value of attached property stood at Rs 37,41,401.
Major contraband seizures included 102 grams of brown sugar, 23 grams of heroin, 8.052 kg of charas, 9.212 kg of poppy straw, 186 bottles of codeine phosphate, and 11,832 capsules of Spasmo-Proxyvon.
She said that the police also destroyed significant quantities of seized drugs, including 123.728 kg of poppy straw, 2,811 bottles of codeine phosphate, and 28,316 capsules.
Furthermore, she mentioned that Sopore Police, in collaboration with the revenue and other departments, destroyed 15 kanals of wild hemp cultivated on state land to eliminate illegal drug cultivation.
In collaboration with the State Investigating Agency, Sopore Police also seized two residential houses linked to drug trafficking activities, SP said.
The police operation throughout the year has led to the confiscation of a substantial quantity of illegal drugs, with an international market value of approximately Rs 65 lakh.
The drugs seized included heroin, brown sugar, charas, poppy straw, and other narcotics, in line with ongoing efforts to combat the rising menace of drug abuse.
SP emphasized the importance of public awareness, highlighting that the police had been actively educating the community about the dangers of drug abuse.
“We are working relentlessly to create awareness and empower the people to take a stand against drugs,” she said.
In her appeal to the youth, the SP urged them to reject drugs and focus on building a brighter future. She called on teachers and parents to play a proactive role in helping eradicate drug abuse from society.
