527 Stone Crusher Units Operational in J&K, Development Work Unaffected: Dy CM Surinder Choudhary

JAMMU: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that 527 stone crusher units are currently operational across Jammu and Kashmir, while development activities remain unaffected despite several units being non-functional.

Responding to a Calling Attention Notice moved by legislator Balwant Singh Mankotia, the Deputy Chief Minister said that out of a total of 691 units, 164 are non-functional, including 48 that have been sealed or closed for non-compliance.

He emphasized that the operational units are functioning strictly as per regulations and continue to supply essential construction material, ensuring that ongoing development projects across the Union Territory are not impacted.

Choudhary highlighted that the government has taken firm measures under the Jammu & Kashmir Minor Mineral Concession, Storage, Transportation of Minerals and Prevention of Illegal Mining Rules, 2016, along with guidelines from the Pollution Control Committee, to curb illegal mining and regulate crusher operations.

He added that compliant units are running smoothly, while those violating norms—such as lacking environmental clearance, consent, or pollution control measures—have been shut down after due notice. Authorities acted in accordance with legal provisions to protect public health and the environment, he noted.

The Deputy Chief Minister further stated that regular inspections are being conducted to prevent illegal operations, and strict action is being taken against violators. Reaffirming the government’s stance, he said efforts will continue to strike a balance between development needs and environmental protection across Jammu and Kashmir.
