5 booked for renting properties to Rohingyas, 14 for defying DM order

JAMMU, Nov 24: The Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed they have booked five persons who rented out their properties to Rohingya refugees without proper verification.Fourteen house/land owners were also booked in Sub-division East of South zone, Jammu, for defying the DM order under section 163 BNS that requires the property owners to share the details of their tenants/outsiders with the police.
A police statement said that a decision regarding booking of 5 people for renting their properties to Rohingyas without verification was taken after growing concerns about the possibility of rented properties being used for illegal activities by unauthorized individuals.
“J&K Police in Jammu district has identified several instances and likewise registered cases against landlords who have knowingly or unknowingly rented their properties to Rohingya refugees, who are undocumented and pose a potential security threat,” read the statement.
“The District Commissioner of Jammu has issued an order making police verification of tenants mandatory for all property owners in the district. This directive comes in light of increasing concerns regarding the potential threat posed by anti-social elements and unauthorised individuals who may use rented properties for illegal activities,” the statement said.
Initiating a comprehensive investigation in this regard, police said that have registered two FIRs (182/2024 and 184/2024) under section under section 223 of BNS at Nowabad Police Station against Farman Ali and Azam Malik for renting to Rohingyas.
Similarly, they said, three more FIRs (296/2024, 297/2024, and 298/2024) under section 223 of the BNS have been registered against Asima Latief, Mohammad Shakeel, and Zakir Hussain for similar offences.The Jammu and Kashmir Police have also booked 14 people in sub-division East of South Zone, Jammu for defying DM order under section 163 of the BNS that requires the land/property owners to share details regarding their tenants and other outsiders residing in their properties with the police.
A police official said that on the direction of SSP Jammu, an exercise was started by the SP South headed by SDPO East for the verification process of all the outsiders staying as tenants and domestic helps without the knowledge and verification of concerned police station.
During the drive, he said, nine cases were registered at Police Station Bahu Fort and five cases at Police Station Channi Himmat under the relevant sections of the BNS.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have urged all the property owners to ensure they conduct police verification before renting out their properties to avoid legal issues.
