JAMMU: According to an official, the Crime Branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Police filed a charge sheet here on Saturday against three individuals, including a bank employee, for allegedly defrauding farmers after offering them a significant sum for their produce. According to a crime branch spokesperson, a 604-page charge sheet was filed against two brothers from R S Pura, Sonu and Shashi Gupta (who works for a bank), as well as their neighbour Gourav Gupta, at a local court. He stated that Tirath Singh of Gadi Garh filed a complaint in 2019 alleging that several farmers had been defrauded of their harvest and hard-earned money, which prompted the filing of the case against the accused.Singh claimed that the three men, each managing a separate company, had taken the lion’s share of wheat and paddy from nearby farmers, promising them a fat profit, but they never even covered the real expenses, the spokesperson added, embezzling millions of rupees. The official stated that the case was first filed at the R S Pura Police Station and then moved to the Jammu crime branch for a thorough investigation. It was discovered during the investigation that the accused were operating three businesses while Shashi was employed by the J&K Bank and had been collecting farmers’ produce. According to the spokesperson, they eventually defrauded the farmers after accepting cash deposits under the false pretence of offering high interest.
