Jammu Airport explores possibility of starting international flights

JAMMU, Oct 31: Jammu Airport has initiated consultations with various stakeholders to explore the possibility of commencing international flight operations, with a focus on strengthening air connectivity and promoting tourism and trade in the region.

A planning and coordination meeting was held under the chairmanship of Airport Director Devender Yadav and attended by Rahul Sahai, Chairman, Indian Chamber of Commerce, Jammu Chamber, and Rajesh Gupta, Chairman, Tourism Federation of Jammu, besides representatives of airlines, CISF, BCAS, Intelligence Bureau, Customs, Health Services, ground handling agencies and concerned Government departments.

Yadav highlighted Jammu’s potential for international connectivity, citing its religious tourism, strategic location, educational institutions, business activities and defence-related passenger movement.

He said the existing terminal building would be utilised for international operations once domestic flights shift to the new terminal building under the airport’s master plan.

He also informed that Jammu Airport had been included as a spoke airport under the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Hub-and-Spoke Model.

Sahai stressed that the proposed international routes should be commercially viable and ensure sustained operations.

He suggested prioritising connectivity with the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Europe, keeping in view demand from Umrah pilgrims, tourists, students and the business community.

Gupta highlighted the potential of international flights to boost tourism and trade.

The meeting also discussed passenger demand, airline interest, potential destinations, air cargo prospects and operational requirements, including immigration, customs, security clearances, infrastructure and manpower.

Coordination with the Indian Air Force and other agencies was also discussed.
