SRINAGAR, June 12: Peoples Conference president and MLA Sajad Lone took a dig at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, questioning the timing of the interaction ahead of the National Conference’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar demanding restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n

In a post on X, Lone said that although he was abroad, he couldn’t stop himself from reacting after learning about the meeting between the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

Calling the proposed protest “a joke”, Lone said there was “a sense of timing” and argued that the Chief Minister should have met the Prime Minister after the protest instead of before it.<\/p>\n

“A start to the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar. What a joke. There is a sense of timing. Even if we will be lectured now that the date had been fixed earlier, CM sahib should have met after the protest,” Lone wrote on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

Drawing parallels with the events preceding the August 5, 2019 abrogation of Article 370, Lone alleged that leaders had similarly met the Prime Minister shortly before the constitutional changes and subsequent detentions.<\/p>\n

“Why do I get this feeling.They did the same in 2019. And met the same PM sahib a day or so before abrogation. And I think finalised who will be housed where after detention ,” he said, while also taking a sarcastic swipe at the Chief Minister, accusing him of “cracking a joke at the expense of those who voted for him.”<\/p>\n

“I can visualise CM sahib telling PM sahib. Sir we have to do some bit of theatrics. That fake wooden smile. Sir, Uncle must have briefed you,” Lone said<\/p>\n

On Thursday J&K Chief Minister called on Prime Minister in New Delhi and discussed a range of key issues concerning Jammu & Kashmir, including the early restoration of statehood, the economic situation and developmental priorities of J&K.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, the Chief Minister conveyed the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir for the early restoration of statehood, underlining that it would mark an important step in strengthening democratic institutions, deepening public participation and advancing the next phase of the region’s development.<\/p>\n

He requested that the process be taken forward at the earliest.<\/p>\n

Last week, after a marathon meeting, the National Conference announced that its legislators and MPs would stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the opening day of the Monsoon session to press for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n
