SRINAGAR, June 10: In a major boost to rail connectivity in South Kashmir, the Ministry of Railways has approved a commercial stoppage for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag following a meeting between Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.<\/p>\n

The decision is expected to significantly ease travel for commuters, tourists and traders by improving access to one of Kashmir’s key economic and cultural centres.<\/p>\n

Omar on Wednesday met Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi and discussed various issues related to the augmentation of rail services in J&K.<\/p>\n

On April 30 this year, Vaishnaw, along with Omar and other dignitaries, flagged off the Vande Bharat Express service between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, establishing for the first time a direct rail link between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.<\/p>\n

Chief Public Relations Officer said during the high-level meeting, a landmark decision was reached to introduce a commercial stoppage for the prestigious Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag.<\/p>\n

Chief Minister Omar expressed deep appreciation for the Indian Railways’ transformative initiatives in J&K.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that the Vande Bharat service has fundamentally redefined travel between Jammu and Srinagar, cutting down travel time and offering world-class comfort to residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

Beyond passenger movement, the Chief Minister underscored the growing, vital role of the expanded rail network in boosting J&K’s local economy. The seamless and robust movement of essential freight-particularly the region’s famous fruits like Cherry, Apple and cement-through the railway network has drastically optimized logistics, reduced transit costs, and opened up larger markets for local farmers and industrialists.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the partnership, Vaishnaw reiterated the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to the holistic development of J&K.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the introduction of the Anantnag stoppage reflects the Government’s approach of listening to local aspirations and tailoring infrastructure to serve the people effectively.<\/p>\n

J&K Government spokesman said the Chief Minister also drew the attention of the Railway Minister to the scheduled closure of Srinagar International Airport from October 1 to 15, for essential runway maintenance and resurfacing works.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the closure coincides with one of the peak tourist seasons in the Valley and could impact the movement of tourists, pilgrims and local residents.<\/p>\n

In this regard, Omar urged the Railway Ministry to augment railway services to the Kashmir Valley, particularly by increasing the frequency of Vande Bharat trains during the period of airport closure and the associated flight restrictions.<\/p>\n

He said enhanced rail connectivity would provide a reliable alternative to air travel, ensure seamless movement of passengers and help sustain tourism and economic activity during the period.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister noted that improved rail services during the airport closure would benefit visitors arriving during the festive season, including Durga Puja holidays, besides facilitating the travel needs of residents and pilgrims.<\/p>\n
