SRINAGAR, Jun 9: Two soldiers died in an accidental grenade blast in Uri sector of Baramulla district today.A hand grenade exploded accidentally during routine handing over of equipment at a camp in Kamalkote in Uri, resulting in injuries to two jawans, the officials said.
\nThey said the injured jawans were shifted to the Army\u2019s 92 Base Hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
\nInquest proceedings as required under law have been initiated, they added.
\nSrinagar-based Defence PRO said he would comment on the incident only after getting details from the concerned officials.
\nMeanwhile, Security forces arrested a person and recovered two pistols and arms and ammunition from him in Baramulla district.
\nA police spokesman said today that in a significant breakthrough against the unlawful possession and movement of arms, Baramulla Police, in a joint operation with 52 Rashtriya Rifles, recovered a foreign-made pistol during a Mobile Vehicle Checking Point (MVCP) established at Chandsuma, Kanispora, near the FCI Godown and later recovered another pistol and ammunition during a raid.
\nThe spokesman said that during checking, a white Maruti Brezza bearing registration number JK02DN-6527, travelling from Srinagar towards Baramulla, was intercepted for inspection.
\n\u201cThe vehicle was carrying two occupants. During a thorough search, one pistol-CANIK TP9SF METE (9\u00d719 mm), manufactured in Turkey-was recovered from a bag carried by the co-passenger. The individual failed to produce any valid licence or legal authorization for possession of the weapon,\u201d he added.
\nThe accused was identified as Wakeel Ahmed Theekri, son of Noor-ud-Din Theekri, of Kamalkot, Uri in Baramulla district.
\n\u201cPreliminary inquiry revealed that the driver was providing a ride to the co-passenger and claimed no knowledge of the recovered weapon.\u201d
\n\u201cAccordingly, FIR No. 70\/2026 under Sections 7\/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Police Station Baramulla. The weapon was seized and investigation was set into motion to ascertain its source, intended use, and possible links\u201d.
\n\u201cDuring the course of investigation and at the instance of the arrested accused, Baramulla Police conducted a search operation at Kalsi Hardu, Kamalkot, Uri.\u201d
\n\u201cThe search was carried out in the presence of an Executive Magistrate, the local Lambardar, and Chowkidar. During the operation, police recovered one Chinese-made pistol, two magazines, and 13 live rounds of ammunition, which were subsequently seized as evidence.\u201d
\n\u201cThe fresh recovery constitutes a significant development in the case and points towards a larger unlawful arms possession network. Further investigation is underway to uncover the source of the recovered weapons and ammunition and to identify any other persons involved,\u201d the spokesman added.<\/p>\n
