SRINAGAR, May 29: A delegation of Members of Parliament today called for sustained democratic engagement and meaningful dialogue to address \u201cpolitical and social issues\u201d in J&K, stressing that such efforts were essential for building trust and resolving grievances.
\nThe MPs also sought the immediate release of Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid, noting that his continued imprisonment was \u2018weakening\u201d the connection between New Delhi and Kashmir.The delegation, led by Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Sudhakar Singh, and comprising Umesh Babubhai Patel, MP from Daman and Diu, and other political leaders, made the remarks during a visit to Rashid\u2019s residence in Mawar Langate in north Kashmir.
\nThe leaders had travelled to offer condolences to the family following the death of Rashid\u2019s father.
\nAddressing reporters, Singh said the people of J&K should enjoy the same political rights and democratic space available to citizens elsewhere in the country.
\n\u201cThere is no doubt that the people of Kashmir have suffered immensely and their voices must be heard with sincerity, dignity and seriousness,\u201d he said.
\nSingh said dialogue had historically been the most effective means of resolving issues and addressing political concerns.
\nThe delegation also criticised what it termed the Centre\u2019s failure to engage adequately with people through dialogue.
\nIt argued that Governments should respond to political grievances through negotiations rather than confrontation.
\nReferring to Engineer Rashid, Singh described the Baramulla MP as a \u201cbridge\u201d between New Delhi and Kashmir.
\n\u201cThe continued incarceration of Engineer Rashid is weakening the bridge between New Delhi and Kashmir,\u201d Singh said.
\nHe demanded Rashid\u2019s release so that he could continue representing the people who elected him.
\nCommenting on the international situation, Singh expressed concern over developments in the Middle East and their potential implications for India. He also alleged a decline in the country\u2019s diplomatic standing.
\nAnother MP, Patel said the delegation travelled to Kashmir after learning of the death of Rashid\u2019s father. \u201cWe stand with Engineer Rashid and his family in this difficult time,\u201d Patel said.
\nHe called for a speedy hearing in Rashid\u2019s case, saying matters involving elected representatives should be disposed of expeditiously.
\n\u201cWe demand that the issue of Engineer Rashid be addressed through a fast-track process so that he can continue to raise the issues of the people he represents,\u201d Patel said.
\nExpressing confidence in the judiciary, Patel said he hoped justice would be delivered in Rashid\u2019s case.
\nHe also sought to reassure the people of J&K that they were an integral part of the country and had the support of people across India.
\nDuring the visit, the MPs interacted with Rashid\u2019s family members, party leaders and local residents.
\nThey reiterated the need for dialogue, reconciliation and democratic engagement to address the aspirations and grievances of the people of J&K and strengthen trust between the region and the rest of the country.<\/p>\n
