JALGAON (Maharashtra), Aug 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> on Sunday termed crimes against women an unpardonable sin, adding the guilty should not be spared.
\nModi\u2019s strong remarks follow protests against the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata\u2019s RG Kar Hospital and the sexual abuse of two four-year-old school girls in Badlapur near Mumbai. Speaking at the \u2018Lakhpati Didi Sammelan\u2019 in north Maharashtra\u2019s Jalgaon, Modi said the safety of women should be a priority.
\n\u201cThe safety of mothers, sisters, and daughters is the country\u2019s priority. I have repeatedly raised this issue from the Red Fort. Be it any state of the country, I understand the pain and anger of my sisters and daughters,\u201d he said.
\nModi said that he would tell every political party and state government that crime against women is an unpardonable sin. Whoever is guilty should not be spared, he added.
\n\u201cThose helping the perpetrators of crimes against women should not be spared. Be it a hospital, school, government or police station, at whatever level negligence occurs, everyone should be held accountable.
\n\u201cThe message should go from top to bottom. This sin is unpardonable. Governments will come and go, but protecting life and women\u2019s dignity is a big responsibility of all of us, both as a society and as a government,\u201d Modi said.
\nModi said his government has done more for women in the last ten years than all the previous regimes since Independence.
\n\u201cTill 2014, less than Rs 25,000 crore loans were given to women self-help groups but in the last 10 years, Rs 9 lakh crore help was given,\u201d Modi said, referring to the government\u2019s \u2018Sakhi Mandal\u2019 programme.Modi, who interacted with Lakhpati Didis at Jalgaon, released the Rs 2,500 crore revolving fund benefiting 48 lakh members of 4.3 lakh self-help groups.
\nThe Lakhpati Didi scheme is not only about boosting the income of women, but also about empowering future generations, Modi said.
\n\u201cYou must have heard that India is going to become the third-largest economy in the world. Women play a massive role in it. However, it was not the case a couple of years ago,\u201d Modi said.
\n\u201cWomen guarantee the prosperity of every home and every family. However, there was no one to guarantee help for the women,\u201d he said.
\nWomen did not have property in their name, and if they had to take a loan from a bank, they could not avail it, he said. In such a situation, they were not able to build their own small business, he added.
\n\u201cTherefore, I, your son and brother, resolved to ease your lives. We took decisions in the interest of women year after year,\u201d Modi said.
\nHe said that of the 3 crore new houses that will be constructed under the government\u2019s housing scheme, most will be allotted to women.
\nModi said women were the major contributors when Jan Dhan accounts were opened.
\n\u201cThe Mudra scheme offered loans to people without any guarantee, and 70 per cent of the beneficiaries of this scheme turned out to be women. Some people opposed this scheme, citing risk factors and claimed it might become (bad) debt. But I trusted the women and their honesty. Many have repaid their loans,\u201d he said.
\nNow, the upper limit for Mudra loan, offered to non-corporate, non-farm and small and micro enterprises, has been increased to Rs 20 lakh, the PM said.\u201cWhen I visited you during the Lok Sabha elections, I promised we would make three crore sisters Lakhpati Didi. This means women who work in self-help groups and have an annual income of more than one lakh rupees,\u201d he said.
\nIn the last ten years, one crore Lakhpati Didis were made, and in just two months, 11 lakh more Lakhpati Didi were added, he said.
\n\u201cOut of the newly added 11 lakh more Lakhpati Didis, one lakh are from Maharashtra,\u201d he said.
\nModi also said Maharashtra needs the BJP-led Mahayuti government to continue for years to come to ensure the state\u2019s stability and prosperity.
\n\u201cMaharashtra is the shining star of a developed India. The future of the state lies in more investment and job growth,\u201d he said.
\nModi expressed his anguish over the Nepal bus accident in which 14 persons from Jalgaon district were killed. We sent our minister Raksha Khadse to Nepal, Modi said.
\nModi recalled his recent visit to Poland and the respect people there have for the people of Maharashtra.
\nThe PM said that during World War II, the Kolhapur settlement housed Polish refugees, including women and children, and the Polish people respect the people of Maharashtra for this gesture. (Agencies)<\/p>\n
