ANANTNAG : As part of the celebrations for Independence Day<\/a>, participants in a demonstration in the Anantnag<\/a> region of Jammu and Kashmir<\/a> hoisted a gigantic 400-meter tricolour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ initiative was used to organise the event.<\/p>\n

Students participated in great numbers in the Tiranga Rally<\/a> held in the Sadiwara village of Verinag in the south Kashmir<\/a> area. The army and the police assisted in organising the gathering.<\/p>\n

Farooq Ahmad Ganie, the Panchayat Sadiwara Sarpanch, was in charge of the rally, which was carrying a 400-meter national banner.<\/p>\n

“Neither a person nor an ideology owns this Tiranga gathering. It is the Sadiwara village’s common ideology, Ganie remarked.<\/p>\n

According to him, the gathering served as a memorial for the soldiers’ sacrifices.<\/p>\n

“I don’t believe there could be a greater tribute to the jawans, thanks to whom we are able to live in freedom, than this. We ought to confer the title of “proud mother” upon those mothers whose children gave their life in defence of the country.<\/p>\n

“We are honouring the jawans by holding the tiranga, putting up maati (soil), and lighting diyas. We appreciate them,” he said.<\/p>\n

In response to those who had prophesied that nobody would be there to fly the national flag in Kashmir, the sarpanch said that he is glad that so many people of many religious backgrounds have come together to hold the tricolour.<\/p>\n

“India will always have a place in the hearts of all people, young and old. God willing, the national flag will continue to fly proudly,” he said.<\/p>\n
