{"id":15061,"date":"2024-04-15T10:39:46","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T10:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jammubulletin.com\/site\/?p=15061"},"modified":"2024-04-15T10:39:46","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T10:39:46","slug":"india-likely-to-experience-above-normal-rainfall-this-monsoon-imd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jammubulletin.com\/site\/india-likely-to-experience-above-normal-rainfall-this-monsoon-imd\/","title":{"rendered":"India Likely To Experience Above-Normal Rainfall This Monsoon: IMD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI, Apr 15: India is likely to experience above-normal cumulative rainfall in the 2024 monsoon season with La Nina conditions likely to set in by August-September, the <a href=\"https:\/\/jammubulletin.com\/site\/temperature-may-be-above-normal-heat-wave-conditions-expected-in-april-and-may-imd\/\">India Meteorological Department<\/a> (IMD) has said on April 15However, normal cumulative rainfall does not guarantee uniform temporal and spatial distribution of rain across the country, with climate change further increasing the variability of the rain-bearing system.<br \/>\nClimate scientists say the number of rainy days is declining while heavy rain events (more rain over a short period) are increasing, leading to frequent droughts and floods.<br \/>\nBased on data between 1951-2023, India experienced above-normal rainfall in the monsoon season on nine occasions when La Nina followed an El Nino event, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told a press conference here.<br \/>\nIndia is likely to see above-normal rainfall in the four-month monsoon season (June to September) with cumulative <a href=\"https:\/\/jammubulletin.com\/site\/srinagar-other-plain-areas-receive-rains-kashmirs-hilly-regions-get-snowfall\/\">rainfall\u00a0<\/a> estimated at 106% of the long-period average (87 cm), he said.<br \/>\nPositive Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are predicted during the monsoon season. Also, the snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere is low. These conditions are favourable for the Indian southwest monsoon, he said.<br \/>\nModerate El Nino conditions are prevailing at present. It is predicted to turn neutral by the time monsoon season commences. Thereafter, models suggest, La Lina conditions may set in by August-September, Mohapatra said.<br \/>\nIndia received \u201cbelow-average\u201d cumulative rainfall \u2014 820 mm compared to the long-period average of 868.6 mm \u2014 in 2023, an El Nino year. Before 2023, India recorded \u201cnormal\u201d and \u201cabove-normal\u201d rainfall in the monsoon season for four years in a row.<br \/>\nEl Nino conditions \u2014 periodic warming of surface waters in the central Pacific Ocean \u2014 are associated with weaker monsoon winds and drier conditions in India.<br \/>\nThree large-scale climatic phenomena are considered for forecasting monsoon season rainfall.<br \/>\nThe first is El Nino, the second is the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which occurs due to differential warming of the western and eastern sides of the equatorial Indian Ocean, and the third is the snow cover over the northern Himalayas and the Eurasian landmass, which also has an impact on the Indian monsoon through the differential heating of the landmass.<br \/>\nThe southwest monsoon delivers about 70% of India\u2019s annual rainfall, which is critical for the agriculture sector. Agriculture accounts for about 14 percent of the country\u2019s GDP<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15062\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption
